Introduction - Greetings from San Diego

I finally realized that I’m one of those guys that just hangs out and lurks on the registry forums everyday, quietly soaking up as much info about early Porsches as I can. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been about 1-1/2 years since I joined the registry so I figured it’s about time I introduced myself. Trust me, I’ve laughed at many of you, bought a ton of expensive parts from you, and even learned some useful stuff from you. I can’t promise much, but I can promise that I will never post “what’s my car worth?” or “when is the bubble going to burst?” - who cares?

My first rookie mistake was that I chose “356fan” as my name when I signed up. Seriously, how could I use “356fan" on an early 911 registry??? I guess since I didn’t own an early 911 at the time, I panicked and then it was too late to do anything about it (in all fairness, I do own a 356). That changed last October when I was on a business trip in SF and came across a ’72 911T for sale. Bought it after a short test drive and a quick once over. The engine, brakes, and steering all worked so I ended up canceling my return flight and decided to drive it back home to San Diego. I soon discovered that the fuel gauge was sticking and ran out of gas near the San Jose airport. As it turns out, AAA will tow you to the gas station instead of bringing gas to you.

It started raining hard after the gas incident and I realized that it probably would have been smart to put new tires on the car before driving 500 miles in the rain. It was a little sketchy, so I pulled off in Monterey and got a hotel room for the night. It was sunny the next morning and turned out to be an amazing run down the 101 South along the California coastline. It doesn’t take much to realize why we love these cars. You just have to drive them and it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

The car is a blast to drive but has many needs. I’ve had the car for 8 months now and the projects seem to be never-ending. I guess that’s a key part of the passion (or sickness) for early Porsches. Feel free to laugh at my expense as that’s what makes this all fun. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out for your help and hope to be able to return the favor.

    Welcome aboard Tom!
Nice car What are your long term goals/projects for her? Looks pretty well sorted from the pics. I'm currently doing a full engine rebuild/restoration that's been a lot of fun/hectic at times.. GREAT learning experience, but more importantly making lots of good memories that will last a lifetime. Can't wait to get around to driving.. Keep us informed on what's going on...we love lots of pictures!

    Thanks Sebastian.

My original thought was to just drive it and make it more “sports purpose” as I go. The originally silver car was painted black at some point and there are some fender and door fit issues as the gaps are off a bit. The engine is a correct 2.4 MFI engine but not the original one. I ordered a COA and assuming it’s correct (big assumption I know) someone switched out the sports seats and flat sixes that came with the car. Given the lack of originality, it felt like whatever goes, goes. As months went by and I would look at the parts for sale section, I would run across the correct flat sixes and buy them. I’d see a pair of sports seats and buy them. One day, I saw a 2.4 engine listed for sale here and thought the number looked familiar. I pulled out the COA and it turned out to be my numbers matching engine (in need of a full rebuild) so I bought it. What are the odds of that???

So now that I’ve tracked down all these parts, I’m thinking I should try to return the car back to as “original" as I can. (I realize that “original” is a loaded word and you can’t re-create “original”) It’s not about making it worth more but rather it feels like a cool thing to do. So, I’m thinking of either fixing all the body/paint issues next or getting the matching engine rebuilt. Not sure yet. The only thing for sure is that I’ll be driving it a lot until I decide.

Wonder why the original engine was swapped out? Those are CRAZY odds... Should have played the lotto that day

Looks like we are in the same boat.. When I got my car, I got the spare engine first (going back to purchase the original when I come home) both are '71t engines.. Crazy! I believe my car had sports seats added by the dealer. I assume they were dyed blue when the car was painted blue. I was able to find the original color of the seats, (as well as the rest of the interior) it's tan. So I think it's a pretty sweet setup, Irish Green with tan interior. The sports seats aren't on the COA but that doesn't mean that they weren't ordered at the dealership when the car was bought new. I am going to research further into the cars history when I come home. I have a copy of the title provided to me by the PO (before he switched it in his name). That's what I love about these cars, they create quite an adventure!

I agree with you on taking the car back to original.. I have found some things on my car I need to address.. I don't want to do it for value either.. I just feel like the car deserves a good, proper restoration back to stock form after being neglected all these years... What can I say? I have a thing for old cars... Especially ones needing a little love.
