What is the relationship between the shifter boot and carpet?
Right now the boot just flops around over a cruciate hole in the carpet.
That's what it looks like in the owners manual.

German engineering at little less than finest .
The shifter boot doesn't make the car go faster. That's why!![]()
Meaningful relationships between rubber and carpeting aside, the attached photos show correctly installed shifter boots in two perfect 915-equipped 911s, carefully and meticulously restored and assembled using all original OEM parts.
If the car you're inquiring about doesn't look like either of the photos, something is most likely incorrect.

Those pictures are correct for a 1973 and later 911. 1972 and earlier use a smaller shift boot that the bottom flange slips under the carpet.

Thanks for the replies.
Mine is a 72 with the smaller boot.
The hole is untrimmed, I'm concerned about unraveling.
Anyone got a picture?

I'll head out to the barn tomorrow. My '72 hasn't seen the road since 1986 and there's a very good chance that the carpet or the shifter has never been moved. Yes, barn. It would be a barn find if I hadn't been the one who put it there.![]()
Here is a pic with the boot slid up the shifter. It looks like a rough hole in the carpet. Factory direct.![]()
Here is a picture of the shift boot installed. Gearby is correct in that the hole is just cut out and not finished.
