    FS: Early wheel and butterfly

Nothing special here, just an early 420mm wheel that needs to be refurbished. Apparently it left the factory with the special option "dried whale skin"...which is still in very...well "even more dried whale skin". Included with the wheel is a decent butterfly horn button, which may or may not be correct for a 420mm wheel. A batwing may actually be date correct...but who knows. This is what I have, and they like each other so that is all that matters. You know everything I do...so asking $250 for both obo plus shipping.

free bump for educating me that there was an option for "dried whale skin steering wheel." that is one odd finish! i wonder how many of them were actually delivered?

    Dried whale skin...not too common

I have reason to believe that during the period when early door panels were being crafted to represent "elephant" hide, some entrepreneurial young go-getter Porsche employee suggested that the whalers were discarding perfectly good hide which could be had cheap. And when applied to the surface of a hard plastic steering wheel, would actually add a measure of grippy-ness. And with luck over time would continue to age, becoming much like a Vibram sole for the steering wheel...analogous to going from flip-flops to a hiking boot.

I've had a couple of wheels with that covering myself. didn't realize it was rare. it must have been an option mostly ordered in hot climates because both the wheels I had were from desert cars.

would you be interested in a trade for a regular leather covered 420mm wheel in very good condition plus cash?

I think it is rarer than the whale skin ones, looks more like Rhino skin to me. Don't sell it, it will only increase in value.
