Not sure. I am sure that cars around the 700-750 VIN still had them.

Engine 900624 still had the "6"volt flywheel. The issue with your pictured starter if you went to install it the solenoid would be pointing down. Form the picture it looks like there wouldn't be enough depth to mount it into the bell housing.

What makes you "sure"?
The way I interpret Jim's info and what I know myself is there:
1. the starter w/ snout that you posted
2. the starter (like the later one's) w/ 6V bendix
3. the starer (later one, most common) w/ 12V bendix
4. the starter (later one, most common) w/ 12V bendix but slightly different, probably around the introduction of the LWB or may be 911 (70-71) transmission
So if (2) is correct, for what VIN's were those used? I am aware that around 301389? the change was to 12V / 130 teeth, say (3) was introduced around then.

I learned a long time ago to never say never. I can only say that Porsche had no prior history of using a starter with a enclosed bendix and none since. Is it possible that these starters werre used for a vey short period of time? I suppose, but show me the proof. Maybe Allen Henderson can chime in with a picture of his starter .
Regards
Jim
I have taken the pictures of the starter coming from a car with Vin between 700-750 (do not want to disclose the exact VIN as I did not ask the owner for allowance). I saw this starter in a coincidence and was alerted right away as I knew that on the 1964 forum this starter is said to be 1964 only. However here was a car with a VIN well into 1965 that was also carrying it. So much for my certainty.
I neither saw with my own eyes that a Porsche mechanic in 1965 was mounting this on a car being produced then, nor do I have pictures of such event.

Thanks Jim, RIGHT ! Good to never say never, especially for early transition models, i.e. 901s..remember they were STILL making 356s (albeit not too many) when the 901 was being made. The distributor (another post perhaps, you'll not find its number in ANY reference anywhere !) Here's our starter as we found it. The nose piece?, not to worry, it was stuck in the tranny! Thanks!

that could be one data point but like I wrote the starter motor you posted will fit transmission cases up till late 67 at least. Of course the engine needs to have a 109 teeth starter gear. I can also imagine a situation where a starter motor was replaced for whatever reason, and w/ or w/o snout as long as it has a 6V bendix it will work fine. Up till a few years ago, 64 early 65 parts were not hot and date codes and small changes / differences were ignored by most.

901ers, 911ers,
Here's the correct, authentic starter set up for 901 300061. Thanks.

I had 3018XX and it had the nosecone starter. I remember considering changing the flywheel and starter when I was building the motor to make it easier to replace them if needed but I didnt want to end up with worthless parts nobody wanted. I had a 132 tooth rimg gear imstalled on an early flywheel by Ray Litz after Rimco sent it back saying they couldnt do it, there was a very small profile where they attached.
