    Brexit Wins

Two decades ago I was invited to a private dinner in London. The EU vote was upcoming. The Whitehall Museum had been closed early and ten tables of six had been arranged. We were told that a special speaker would join us. As we sat and began small chatter in walks the Iron Lady herself; Margaret Thatcher. She was retired at this point. After appetizers she rose and went forward to a small podium at the front of the room.
She began by discussing the idea of a European Union of nations. Following this she outlined the long history of England. She then talked about the importance of each nations cultural identity and the value of knowing who you are and where you come from. She was no fan of the idea of a united Europe ruled from another city outside her country-Brussels. Regardless of your belief at the time it was a compelling argument and unlike today one could respect the opinion without disrespecting the messenger.
At the end of the evening we returned to our room to find a signed edition of Ms. Thatcher's memoir.
Each euro nation is unique and the analogy to the cars each produces is as pronounced. Where would we be without the English and their contribution to small efficient engines and bad wiring or the Italian's museum quality designs that often function poorly or the French and their unique contributions to forward thinking suspension components mid century and the stylish Bugatti and of course the german's penchant for precision and periodic need to conquer.
Inside or outside the EU, the earth will still rotate and cycles will cause nations to add strength one decade and decline the next and back, and forth and back and forth.

Brussels is our capital... Belgium is the country.

I don`t have anything nice to say about the quitters, so I`ll leave it at that.

We won't see the full impacts of this for years, but my belief, is that they won't be good.
The other members are faced with tough decisions, if they let England exit while keeping the free trade portions intact, with none of the obligations, they are setting a dangerous precedent for a complete breakup.
It must be tough, for a former empire, accustomed to dictating terms, to have ceded much control to a European body. Regional differences seem to have triumphed.
After all, we have still not surpassed our differences 150years after the civil war.
It will be strange, going through border control between Ireland and Northern Ireland, or potentially, England and Scotland.

I won't share my opinion in detail. It's just not worth my time with the 6/5 odds that it'll be deleted by the lib-mods.

Suffice to say I'm thrilled. I'd bet everything I own that this is only the beginning.

And to the OP, count me jealous of your opportunity to experience first-hand one of history's greatest leaders. I've been lucky to meet two U.S. Presidents, but I'd trade both of those meetings for 5 minutes with MT. Very cool.

    Margaret Thatcher indeed.

Not like walking the shores of the Sea of Galilee with Jesus but from a contemporary secular viewpoint?

    What an absolutely awesome experience.

Never underestimate the likelihood of people seeking a simple solution to complex issues to shoot their own toes off.

Or the ability of those with an alternative agenda to try to complicate a common sense issue.

My main interest is in getting some discounts on Scotch, but I fail to see much of an advantage for the English - except in keeping out Romanians and what-not.
