    SWB oil tank authenticity trivia

I am working on dis-assembling my December '65 coupe. The car is pretty original as it was put away in 1976. While taking out the oil tank I noticed that the side of the tank facing the outside of the car appears to be coated with tar over the black paint while the side facing towards the engine is not coated and just painted black. Is this common practice for SWB oil tanks?

    TIA,

    JK

How about the front??? if also coated, maybe it was thrown up by the tire?
