    BaT Description:

This 1972 Porsche 911S coupe is a driver-quality example with a non-matching 2.7-liter engine and five-speed transmission along with a some RS-influenced modifications including steel flares. The car was sold new by William “Bat” Masterson at Brumos Porsche-Audi. It spent its life in Florida, Colorado and Missouri, where it remained dormant for several years until its purchase in project state by the current owner in 2012, who brought the car to its current condition. It is now said to be a good driver, and the current owner has added over 8000 miles since. The car has working air conditioning and can be enjoyed as is, or be a solid candidate for restoration in its original color of Glacier Blue. This is a factory 911S sold with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity along with service records from 1987-1998 and a clean Wyoming title. A spare 2.4L engine case is also included.

Originally painted in the uncommon shade of Glacier Blue, the car’s color was changed to Grand Prix white at some point in the 1980s. Described as driver quality, the finish shines decently overall but wears its share of chips and road marks along with the occasional tape line on rubber seals. Steel RS flares have been grafted onto the rear wheel arches, and panel fit looks good overall. Signs of bodywork exist including in the passenger door, and the seller points out that some panels do not exactly match in color. Corrosion is present in the form of bubbling in several locations including the lower windshield frame along with the passenger-side door and fender. A separate oil filler door was fitted on the 911’s right side for the 1972-only location of the oil filler tank forward of the rear wheel.

The front bumper cover shows slight distortion along with scuffs and a cracked corner. Metalwork is somewhat weathered but looks largely straight, including chrome rear overriders and rocker trim. Rubber trim appears serviceable throughout. Black and silver dished 15″ Fuchs are 7″ wide in the front and 8″ in the rear, wearing Yokohama AVS rubber. The front compartment is equipped with a camber brace and a clean liner covering a stock spare wheel and dual closed-cell Odyssey batteries in original locations. Original Glacier Blue paint is visible inside the smuggler’s box, and the trunk pan shows no visible rust in the corners.

Inside, period corduroy Recaro LS seats include recently-added US Navy Tartan-pattern inserts. Upholstery wear appears limited in photos, though marking is seen on the outer driver’s side bolster. Carpeting is presentable where visible and is protected by aftermarket mats, while door panels look to have been customized in a hybrid of stock and RS styles. The original door pockets and other miscellaneous interior parts are included in the sale and reportedly in restorable condition. The dash shows no discernible cracks or notable distortion, and is fronted by an otherwise stock-looking steering wheel sporting a thick leather wrapping. The original Blaupunkt stereo has been replaced with a blanking plate, as has the clock in the instrument cluster. True mileage is unknown, as the car’s original speedometer was at some point replaced with a later electronic unit which currently reads 19k miles. Factory air conditioning is working according to the seller.

Under the rear deck lies a non-original 2.7-liter engine built by David White’s Autosports of Tampa, FL in 1994 according to included records. Reportedly carried out with the intent to mimic Carrera 2.7 RS specifications, the build used a mixture of new and used parts. A valve adjustment was performed approximately 200 miles ago along with an oil and filter change. Mechanical fuel injection is via an RS-appropriate Bosch 019 pump and a set of lines appear to have been tapped directly into the top of the plastic air box. The seller has driven the car approximately 8,500 miles in his four-year ownership and says it runs well, giving ample low-end torque, quick acceleration and good high-RPM responsiveness. A spare blank 2.4-liter 4R/5R case is also included in the sale.

The five-speed transmission received new syncros along with first- and second-gear dogs in 1992, and shifting remains precise and free of grinding as reported by the seller. Steering is said to feel good with straight tracking and solid cornering, while braking is reportedly firm thanks to stainless hoses and holds up well to hard driving. Floors and pans are original and solid according to the seller, though the underside is not entirely free of corrosion. A second oil cooler was added in the left front to support the right-side original. Some fluid leakage is evident but said to be minor.

The Porsche COA verifying the original color of code 66 Glacier Blue. The car comes with a bound maintenance book from Brumos which shows personal contact info for Mr. Masterson as well as stamps through July of 1973. An original owner’s manual is also included. Service records are extensive from 1987 to 1998 and include the 1994 engine build, but are otherwise anecdotal. Pre-purchase inspections are encouraged by the seller prior to the auction’s close.

    Not mine..

    Text:

I have owned my 1967 911S for almost 10 years. 5,502 miles of joy, pride and stewardship of Porsche's most significant 911 model.

My S adventure began back in January 2007 when my friend Robert called to share the news of a life changing, far away move and new job. It wasn't long before the subject turned to his beloved Porsche of 30 years and would I be interested in becoming it's new owner. It sadly could not accompany him on his move.

Robert had become the owner of the S back in October of 1978. The Porsche had approx. 58,000 miles and an engine issue. Mark B., the owner, was putting the S up for sale because he could allocate neither the time nor funds for an engine repair.

My friend Robert, an obsessive and meticulous automotive genius embraced the project with gusto. He dismantled the engine and discovered the failure had originated with a single plugged orifice in one of the cam oil spray tubes which then caused a cascade of failures.

Robert procured a temporary 'loaner' engine so that he could drive and evaluate the S while the original engine rebuilding took place. A brilliant piece of foresight, because the rebuild process became a 10 year (!) project. Being an engine man, he predictably enjoyed the project more than driving, with only 1k miles driven in those 10 years with that temporary loaner engine.

Robert kept incredibly detailed records and photos of the entire process. This was not a mere engine repair but a complete re-manufacturing to the highest standards.

He proudly documents 1,675 parts replaced, 791 of which were new factory OEM parts including new 'in the box' heads, a new 2.0 S Mahle piston/cyl set, new oil pump, new cam, new aluminum case, new clutch, new turbo chain tensioners etc. Robert has a CD of hundreds of photos.

My friend made good use of that decade long labor of engine love by also rebuilding the brakes and installing all new lines and DOT5 fluid. New Koni shocks were also fitted.

The S features a spotless and original black interior as well as it's original special order silver metallic color (factory paint code #97-96024L). It was reportedly repainted prior to 1978.

The underbody is structurally sound and nothing is hidden from view under aftermarket undercoatings. Typical weakness is visible at the original rear jacking sockets on the inner rocker panels and a torn but still present front towing hook needs attention (from when the Porsche was flat bedded to me 9 years ago) along with the outer shell it mounts to. Good solid rear torsion bar tube mounting panels, solid front A-arm mountings.

Additional photos of the underbody and suspension are available in the photo link below.

The S has a factory optional electric sunroof, optional rear window wiper, aux. gasoline heater and a special order factory outside temperature gauge.

The original Fuchs 4 1/2 inch forged alloy wheels (NOS, see Robert's comments below) look spectacular, as do the Euro H-1 headlights that Robert installed (originals included in box). He also installed an updated early 70's outside rear view mirror (original again included in a box).

The front bumper valance was replaced in the 70's with a fiberglass S spoiler/bumper which was all the rage at that time.

The 911 S also features the original type, period correct, factory steel heater boxes, the original owners manual and a factory touring parts kit whose contents hint of the factory blessing a roadside(!) engine rebuild. Included is the car's official Porsche factory 'Birth Certificate' (Certificate of Authenticity) verifying all options, color and numbers.

Once the engine project was completed, Robert re-installed the original, now fully remanufactured, engine and went on to enjoy a mere few hundred break-in miles over an almost 20 year period (!) before his move and my ownership began. As I said before, he enjoyed that rebuilding process more than driving.

While in my care, the S has been meticulously maintained by Porsche guru Andreas (Andy) Bittenbinder, who is available to answer technical questions. I suspect he will miss the S as much as I wilI.

Why is the S for sale? I am parting with my Porsche because I am retiring this year and relocating back to my birthplace overseas.

The reasonable and sane reserve assures the S will sell in this auction!

The S is available for inspection during the auction. If you come in person you will appreciate our modern and uncrowded Pittsburgh International Airport and enjoy the especially beautiful summer weather.

I ask that you please contact me before bidding and feel free to ask questions.

Shipping worldwide is welcome if you are able to make ALL the arrangements.

    Don

Please do not hesitate to ask questions. If your question contains private information or you ask me not to post publicly, I will not post it for public viewing.

Here's something really incredible. Robert just sent me this U Tube link of a VHS analog video he made long ago and just uploaded on U Tube for us to view. A time lapse video of this S's engine assembly. Enjoy

    [URL]https://youtu.be/owQl4Lu1NhE/[URL]

For an encore Robert has just sent another video which he has uploaded to U Tube today.

You get to meet the almost 30 year younger last owner of my S. Bring a big container of popcorn, it's almost 1/2 hour long, fully narrated and ends in the the same incredible time lapse assembly of this cars engine.

This should help explain the passion Robert had for the project and why the'process' was so important to him.

Copy and paste on U Tube.

    Auction Description:

    - Single-family ownership since new
    - Original matching-numbers engine
    - Routinely maintained; extensive service documentation
    - Includes original owner’s manual, tool roll, and sales invoice
    - A highly original and much-loved Porsche

This incredible 1972 Porsche 911 S was purchased new by the current owner’s father, William Irwin, for use by his then-company Conval Equipment Ltd. Mr. Irwin bought the fully loaded 911 as a demonstrator from H.J. Pfaff Motors in New Market, Ontario, just north of Toronto. As a demo for the dealership, the Porsche was equipped with a myriad of options, including a limited-slip differential, Koni shock absorbers, Recaro Sport seats, electric sunroof, reinforced rear bumper, as well as an antenna, loudspeaker, and very rare air conditioning. Finished in Albert Blue over a tan vinyl interior, the 911 was sent to Pfaff on 14 March 1972 and bought by Irwin on 9 August of that year.

William Irwin would drive the car regularly on business trips around Canada for the ensuing years, always enjoying the drive. About nine years later, when the car was no longer being driven much by the elder Irwin, it was given to his son, Tom, as a gift. Having sat for several years, the Porsche was not running at its best. As such, Tom sent the 911 to British Sports Car Limited in Toronto in June 1981 to have the engine rebuilt and fully sorted.

Soon after being rebuilt, Tom and his father were on a business trip to northern Canada in the fall of 1981. Stuck behind a semi-truck, Tom went to pass the slower truck but decided against it when he saw oncoming traffic down the road. Maybe not used to driving the faster Porsche, William egged his son on, telling him that “it’s a goddamn Porsche, just step on it!”

Since that day, Tom Irwin has kept his father’s Porsche on the road, routinely servicing the car every year and tending to any issues that arose during his tenure. Apart from having been repainted in its original Albert Blue color some 35 years ago, as well as having the sport seats more recently rebuilt and re-trimmed in matching tan vinyl, this incredible 911 S remains highly original throughout. While the optional air conditioning has since been removed for better performance, the original unit and bracket are included with the car. Furthermore, amongst the extensive collection of service receipts that are included is the original sales invoice from Pfaff Motors, as well as the receipt for the Zeibart undercoating, which was applied when the car was new (even the Zeibart sticker remains on the windshield). Amongst the documentation and other assorted spare parts that have been collected over the years, the Porsche also includes its original owner's manual and service booklets in their pouch, original tool roll and jack, the original spare Fuchs wheel, and even the original Porsche car bra that first came with the car.

    - Restored by a noted Porsche marque expert
    - The 17th Porsche 911S Coupe produced for '73
    - Complete with Porsche Certificate of Authenticity
    - Includes Porsche key fob, tool kit, and driver's manual

An excellent example of the legendary, top-specification 'S' from the last model year for the "pure" first-generation models. Featuring a marque-specialist restoration, this 1973 Porsche 911S 2.4 Coupe retains the factory-original colors and options, and comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming original data. An extremely early-production car - the 17th built for '73 - sold new to the USA. Legendary dynamics and response. Includes Porsche key fob, tool kit, and drivers manual.

Numbered 9113300017, this very early-production 911S coupe is the 17th of just 1,430 examples produced for 1973 and it marks the final production year before increasingly stringent U.S. federal requirements took effect with power-robbing emission controls and heavier 5-mph impact bumpers. Construction of this 911S began on August 1st, 1972, and it also holds the distinction of being one of the first 911s imported to the USA in 1973. It was sold new to Dr. Bill Hardpongue of Kansas City, who retained it through the early 1990s. After passing through two subsequent owners, this 911S underwent a no-expense-spared restoration by marque expert Phil Bagley to its factory-original state. Phil parted with the vehicle in 2013. This Porsche 911S remains impressive to this day; its exterior, in the factory-optional Silver Metallic, is excellent, as is the black leather interior. The fuel injected 2.4-liter engine is fully sorted and road-ready. It comes complete with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity verifying its early history. As offered, this early-production 1973 Porsche 911S stands as a great example from the last model year of the historic first-generation models.
