Special early 1964 features on 1965 cars

I noticed the oil dip stick on my April 65 car (717) does not have the word MAX on it just a line, I assume this is an early feature and I wonder when it ended?

I just realized that the hockey puck horn button comes in two styles, specifically how the trim rim is connected and holds the embossed leather center piece in place. I also did not see this listed in the excellent summary. Photo below. In one version, which I'm pretty sure came off of my 911 #1744, the trim is crimped to a base much like the chrome instrument bezel. The base is a press fit into the plastic hockey puck; some adhesive was also used. Looks like it would be difficult to remove the trim ring from the base and reinstall! The other style has tabs, which is easy to remove.

The horn button on 301382 has the tabs on the chrome ring on the hockey puck.

I've been told that the ones with tabs are original and the ones without tabs are aftermarket or reproduction ones that were made many years ago, perhaps decades ago. I can't verity that but I have heard it from a couple of different sources.

I just confirmed thru photos that the version with the tabs was in fact on 301744, fitted to aluminum spline wood steering wheel. Not sure where the press-fit version came from; it was in my general inventory.

there is a tread about this---as far as i remember the conclusion was that the non tab version is 68...i can confirm that my 68 has the non tab ring and also the non tab plastic puck.

i did a reproduction run on the buck some years ago...unfortunatly i had a non tab sample that i copied---many custies where wondering about the missing slots.

my Car #717 has snaps in the floor for the floor mats. We have already determined that the earliest cars do not have this and then Porsche stopped adding snaps to the floor board later. I'm ready to propose a theory, based on my original drivers side floor mat I can see snap receptacles and I notice that the bottom of the mat is carpet, later they added kind of a bumpy tar stuff, which made them skid resistant. I propose that the earliest cars had no snaps and simple carpet and customers complained about slipping floor mats, Porsche added snaps then later went to a less labor intensive method of no snaps and added non-skid surface to the back of the floor mats.

I'm not sure where you are getting the information on the cars below number 717 being without snaps, I know a few cars with 300 0xx and 300 1xx, and 300 2xx - they all had the carpet snaps. Each had 11 per car. Eight are welded in and three are screwed to a surface, two wood, one metal.

The stands for the snaps were spot welded to the floor prior to welding the body together. The coir (floor insulation) has a 25mm circle opening die cut to allow the snap base to poke through.

Does this sound like your car too?

Great example you show with the carpet having black cloth binding remaining where it was light protected and the exposed surface fades to tan (on the back seat area). The pedal openings have leather sewn in place. The tab leathers (belting) are held on with a rivet.

Note the rubber heal pad has a light white wisp in the material surface. Unobtainium.

sounds like I stand corrected, not sure where I got the info. On the chart the one earlier car that indicates whether they have them or not, they say they do not (car #299) see the 15th item down under chassis.

So these hold on snaps on the floor dissappeared after 1620?
And was then repleaced by carpet with non-skid surface on the back.
