    Radio removal?

I searched for similar threads on this question, but they weren't much help.

Simple question. My car has a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio. How is it removed?

    (1) Is it removed by moving the radio towards the trunk the car? , or

    (2) Is it removed by first removing the dash fascia panel and removing the radio outwards towards the passenger compartment of the car?

I have the radio loose, but there isn't sufficient room to employ the approach described in (1), hence the question. There is a welded bracket that limits the radio's travel towards the trunk of the car.

order of things should somewhere in the vicinity of
    1. Remove knobs
    2. remove nuts behind knobs
    3. you may have to remove a brace behind back of radio to underside of dash
    4. pull radio back towards the trunk
    5. remove antenna, speaker and power connection

Not a Frankfurt, mine is an Essen (64/65) and done as above:

    Thanks.

    I did the following:

    1. Remove knobs
    2. remove nuts behind knobs
    3. you may have to remove a brace behind back of radio to underside of dash
    4. pull radio back towards the trunk

This is where the problem begins. There is a U shaped brace on the back of the radio, which I have removed, but then there is a second brace that is welded to the underside of the dash that limits the movement of the radio any further towards the trunk, and doesn't provide clearance for the radio shafts to clear the dash.

    My car is a 1970.

The piece welded, may need to be bent to take it out. but you won't be able to pull the radio from the front..

My model year (1970) may differ from yours with respect to the radio install. Here's the trim panel for my model year. The size of the radio opening suggests to me that the radio may in fact be removed by pulling the radio in the direction of the passenger compartment to remove it? I doubt whether the welded bracket that limits the radio's movement toward the trunk would have to be removed or bent to remove the radio.

can you tell us more about your current setup? you currently have a frankfort installed....so is the radio and knobs flush on the basketweave facing?....or does your radio have a face plate on the front as well that covers the over the knobs? There are also locking tabs and each side of the radio that you need to unlock to push the radio out the back.

On that link you posted of the trim; it is not showing that there is also an additional radio faceplate that fits behind those top and bottom tabs where the hole is for the radio. You glue the basketweave on that add'l faceplate and then you have to bend it in behind those tabs...from the front. That ends up giving you the flat/flush basketweave look on the dash. Then the radio is inserted from the rear.

    here is a link to the faceplate if you need one;

Here's a picture of my radio. As you can see there is no faceplate.

The only "faceplate" is the dash trim piece that has the basketweave on it. Do I remove that dash trim piece to free the radio? If so, how is that dash trim piece removed?

The radio is completely loose, however it is captive between the dash and the welded bracket.

thanks for the pic. That looks like the factory setup. No you don't remove that face plate with trim...leave it.

as others have said, if the radio is free from everything, it should come out the back. If it's loose but still sort of hitting on things you just have to tweak things to get it out. Maybe push the radio butt up and/or toward driver side, if possible to clear the bracket? I think I had to take the back up and then the radio sort of came free back up in there and then I could lower it down and out. I agree I think you need to get it clear of that rear welded bracket.

Thanks for your comments. The radio was being held in by two clips. I was able to gain access to them by removing the dash trim piece. Once the clips were free the radio easily came free by moving it toward the trunk:

Just to be clear, the removable chrome trim piece that surrounds the radio's tuning dial is indeed the radio's faceplate. It's pretty expensive, so you might want to treat it kindly.
