here is my gold metallic tag.
Built September 1970. (Sold as 1971)
    Porsche built not karmann
    H for herberts
    8888-H

Notice too: how stamping is straight and perfect.
    Not all dented and wompy.

    Interesting . . .

    . . . mine was a Herberts car, also . . .

    . . . but it came with a decal --- not a metal tag

    When did this practice change?

The decal was a 1970 thing that did not last. Only for Porsche built, not Karmann. Apparently they had a tendancy to fall off.

I have an early MFI 73’ metallic gold targa. The paint tag is painted red; a legacy of it’s repaint from the 80’s. I will remove the paint to see what it says... tbc.

    911T,
if you use laquer thinner...it will eat up the black ink on the tag.

if you use brake fluid. it will probably work the best. it might not attack the ink. (hard to say)
you would have to tape everything of real good. and let the brake fluid soak for a day or two.
    keep applying twice a day.

aircraft paint stripper might work too. but I dont know if it will attack the ink.

Agreed —it would be a shame to damage it. I will carefully look at it and see what can be done.

to complete this thread, I've compare paint recipes from Glasurit for the different gold metallic codes. It shows that the colors 113, 133, 144 and L97G (VW/Audi) are all the same color. Only 140 is a different mix.
(although through these years, the "generic" 8888 code was used for marketing).
