Thanks Chuck, I guess Tweed must be Houndstooth then, but I've seen Houndstooth listed as such on other kardexes? Anyone know for sure if "Tweed" is in fact Houndstooth? Eric?

BTW - I've always wanted to see someone use Alexander Girard Checker fabric on some seat inserts - especially on a bright colored car. It's period correct -1960s (Herman Miller furniture) but not Porsche correct. They come in a variety of colors and have been re-issued by a company called Maharam. Would be cool with Viper Grn! Colors below are a bit washed out due to compression - other cool vintage samples here.

Great thread. Thanks for the houndstooth samples, Chuck. Anyone who has ever tried to source the correct wool houndstooth material knows it is next to impossible to find.

You guys may or may not either know or be interested in this, but I'll throw it out there anyway. Larry Dennis Company in TX is making a houndstooth patterned material from an blended polyester upholstery grade fabric that is real close to having the right pattern. Its not wool, but it looks good and is readily available for $30/yard.

Stefan from GTS in Las Vegas was working on getting some of the correct wool houndstooth for a set of seats for me the last time I talked to him as well.

Heres a sample of the Larry Dennis Company fabric:

Here's a picture of the fabric on a Recaro sport seat I have owned since 1978. I'm still waiting for a sample of what is supposed to be original fabric and will post a picture when I have it.

    Sorry guys,

72 and 73 corduroy is definitely a wider wale, I'm without a scanner, and the digital is at home........the wale is between 5 and 6 ribs per inch.

The documentation is the 1972 and 1973 pages of my Porsche Factory Material samples book, and 2 pairs of original sport seats currently in my garage with this material still present. Lastly Peter Morgan's "Original 911" page 35 has the narrow wale in a 71, and page 49 has the wider wale in a 73.

The pages in Chuck's material book, I have also, but it pertains to the earlier cars.....

Will post a pic sometime soon.

    Regards,
    Eric

If Eric says the factory '72-73 corduroy is between 5 and 6 wales then it is.
I was going by the original '73 Recaro race bucket that I have.

Arggh...forgot the digital again, but I'll post it soon!

The Recaro bucket cloth.....is a different cord from the factory seat cord. The Recaro cloth is narrower ribbing, with more "space" between the ribs.

Hope it's okay if I tag my Sport Seat issue on the end of this thread. I had my seats rebuilt last fall. They were just beat to heck. Torn vinyl, foam rubber turning to dust, ripped webbing. Although my butt was on the floor it actually fealt pretty good sitting that low in the car. Anyway I had them rebuilt. They look great. The problem is that I'm 6'2" and now I almost don't fit in the car. The guy built up the cushion and reinforced the webbing to the point where I feel like I'm sitting on the seat instead of in it. I've already got the seats on the lowest mounting points. I'm going back to the shop and don't expect any problems getting it corrected. Does anyone have a decent picture of a correctly assembled Sport Seat that illustrates what the seat cushion contour should really look like, ie. the depth?

    Thanks for the help.

This is a common problem with the seat restoration people. They over stuff the seats and raise you to high. They are not familiar with the way the seat was before the resto. They take the "bucket" and narrow, or raise it beyond where it should be. Kinda hard to fix when you are all done.
