Thread: Original steel-framed RS ducktail details ?

  1. #11
On a related ducktail topic, were the hinges painted the same body color during this time period?

Good info here. I have two ducktails and can now investigate as to it's origins. I do suspect they're probably aftermarket. Thanks guys.

    Ernie:

How did the factory attach the rubber T handles to the steel frame? Was it with rivets (alum or steel) or small bolts with nuts?

This is an NOS (never mounted or painted) '74 factory tail. Similar details as Chuck's and Ernie's.

    Very cool Jens.

Are the two small pieces of reinforcing metal spot welded on the inside of the back edge?

This is a factory '74 tail that Brumos fit to my friend Damon's RSA Brumos Special. The holes for the bracket have been filled but are evident on the back side. The license plate light holes have been filled as well.

He has a different tail on the car now and dug it out as an afterthought and asked me to look at it. Sure enough, it's real.

Brian, I'll have to look. What's interesting is the surprisingly funky finish on the inside of the sides. Feels as if it was done by a kid with a handful of resin and glass. Very rough with a half inch of relief to the chop and waves, but consistent on the tails I've seen.

It shows up better on the Brumos tail. Both are identical.
