Frank, sorry to hear about your experience with PCNA. That said, my experience with the Porsche Classic in Stuttgart was similar. Unless somebody has a friend on the inside, I do not think there is any chance of them giving out the info. Why should they? I guess I understand their position - for all they know it is we who played around with the numbers.

So, which would you rather have... a 1969S with the VIN off by one digit or a 1970S with the VIN of a 1969T?

Interesting note: She claims that my engine # doesn't exist.
That's is interesting since the ser. numbers for 70'S motors run from 6300001 to 6302480 and 6302248 diffinently falls within those prod.#s. I don't think Porsche would arbitruarily skip a number.

I guess $120 a pop for C of A's isn't enough to cover doing any real leg work.

I wonder if Roland Kunz (no relation I belive) could get info. He lives in Stuttgart and has factory ties. I'll see if I can dig him up.

Frank, I blew yours up as big as I could. I do not want to say is looks wrong, but a cleaner version would help. The 8 does not look right to me, see other pics, and the last couple of numbers do not seem to be deep enough...

    Frank,
Is PCNA saying that your production # matches the VIN # stamped in the trunk? This is bizarre, especially with no recorded '70S motor with #2248.

Can you clean that area up a bit and take a closer photo of the engine serial #? Did you take the dash pad off the dash and find a written in chaulk production # underneath that matched the stamped #? Very weird indeed.

I still haven't uncovered all of the numbers.

My 2nd digit is a mess. I assumed that it is a 3 but...
    8?
    6?
The internal # is definitely 911/02.

    911/02 = 911S

The second digit could only be a 1,2 or 3 (T,E,or S) on a 70' motor which this motor obviously is because the third digit is 0 (70'). The second digit shares no resemblance to a 1 or 2 so it must be a 3.

Changing the number on a mag case would be far to difficult to do without leaving a trace. The sheet metal would be much easier to change. It could be stamped flat then sanded flatter and then restamped.

What are some date no.'s on some of the parts like the gauges? Also check date stamps for the wheels.

I agree with Tom... anything can be done.

Here is a close up of the 8s... get out your spectacles gents.
You can clearly see the difference in shape. Porsche used very specific character sets to prevent people fiddling with the numbers (one cannot change an 8 to a 9 or a 3 to an 8) and this 8 does not fit with others. I will try and find another pic from an older car.

    More pics.
Production # on top of dash matches # behind kneebar.
I've included a pic of the aluminum plate also.

Not to digress but I have a '69 911S w/ electric windows and sunroof. It's my understanding that electric windows were not available until 1970. ????
