    Smuggler's Lid Gasket for '70E?

Getting ready to install the smugglers lid on my '70E project and I noticed for the first time that there are differences in the sealing gasket. The attached photo shows two types. When did Porsche change from the one on the RHS to the one on the LHS? What is the purpose of the break in the seal? Which is correct for a 1970 E without a front heater?

Tom, my very original 70 car has the solid rubber. I think somebody has been hacking a chunk out of the other one.

My 70, 72 and 73 have the same gaskets and I have no reason to believe any of them were ever changed...none with the cut-out.

That cut gasket is simply crude molestation.....however..

What is the vintage of the LH lid? No under coating and no tabs for securing the heat insulation. the RH lid looks like a SWB lid with old style shutz, but from a non-heater car as the tabs are untouched and sealed with shutz.

Trivia Question: When did those tabs disappear?

Thanks for the input guys. I have a variety of lids with gaskets and it seems like the later ones all have the cut out in the gasket. Now that I know the ‘70 gasket should be solid, it is not really important to me when the change was made. I ordered a new one from Stoddard. If it is not the correct one, I will restore one of my originals.

Your photo suggests that the break in the seal is for the brake booster cars where the brake lines pass through the smuggler's box.

Not sure what you mean by "lip-stick sample".
