How to box and ship seats

This topic comes up fairly often and I was packing up some seats today to go to Australia and thought it would help everyone to document the process.

1. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, or U-Haul and buy a Wardrobe Box
2. Put the first seat in right side up
3. Put the second seat in upside down. This works well because the only parts of the seats that are touching are the soft, cushy parts.
4. Tape up the box

I've done this probably 100 times, never had a damaged seat.

Very helpful - I am in the middle of this. Question - the box is damn heavy. Are UPS OK when you walk in with it?
And I also assume sending in two boxes is more expensive?

UPS allows up to 150 lbs. The reason is makes sense to make it heavy is because when the box gets this big, or even one seat you're being charged for Dimensional Weight, meaning big box. So you might as well make the box heavy because you're paying for a big box either way.

in my experience with these big boxes, it's worth checking sites like shipnerd instead of going to UPS/FedEx directly (unless you have a business account with the shipper already). it's saved me a bunch of $$ when shipping wheels, bumpers, etc., and the packages end up going through UPS anyway.

This is true. Every shipper has a Tier they are on, based on volume. When you walk into a UPS store you are at the highest price.
For example, I can ship UPS for about half if I print the label through ebay and we are on a decent Tier.

I've only done this once, and I ended up with damaged seats.
Depending on the shipper, these boxes go through at least 2 but probably 3 or 4 flights when shipped to Australia from the US. (via Hawaii, Sydney, Melbourne)
These cartons may get soft when wet (or from high humidity) and I had 5 holes in the box when it arrived, even though the seats were covered in plastic and there was soft filling material added to protect them.
I ended up with scratches on the grp RSR seat back
My 2c: I would add a step to the list above to put some bubblewrap on those parts that stick out most.

Easier said than done but I would try to use an inner box followed by an outer box that is 3 inches larger all around. I have received not one but two paintings that were punctured during shipment (most likely by a fork lift). My .02
