Decklid Madness: What are the Odds?

You may remember a thread from a couple years back about my 67S:
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...609#post739609

As mentioned therein, the original decklid was MIA when I bought the car. I assumed it was trashed long before as the rear latch panel showed signs of being bumped. Then, last week, these pictures show up in a for-sale ad right here on the Registry:

To say that I was interested is, well, putting it mildly. Fast forward through several days of anticipation and a flight to North Lake Tahoe, and I’m convinced this decklid is the one, complete with bondo behind the lower lip (the damage isn’t nearly as bad as I’d assumed) and a couple of holes from a thief’s crude attempt to disguise the car with a slanted 912 script (early drama in the car’s history). Anyway, the decklid has been rescued and is back home with its sheet metal family.

The seller said it came from Gardnerville, Nevada. I’m guessing it was thrown on a parts pile after the rear-ender, then someone figured it still had some life left in it. If only a decklid could talk.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.

Steve, I found this thread and thought NO WAY! It can’t be true. In all my years in the restoration business, I have never come across a story like this. Love it!
