    901/54 gearbox.

    Greetings,

I know my 911L has her original gearbox, and while driving I have noticed the ratio on 1st and 5th are pretty short.
According to Kardex and COA, the gearbox type is 901/54.
This type seems to correspond to a type available in 1967/68 only with short ratios as shown below:
    1ère : 2.643 2ème : 1.600 3ème :1.318 4ème : 1.080 5ème : 0.926 Pont : 4.428 Démultiplication finale dernier rapport
    : 4.100.

I have also found on the same article, that the 901/54 is called Nurburgring ratios (in red below)

If the trans is stamped 901/54 on the bottom, it's a factory gearbox. It also should have serial #9284xxx. Your kardex should should share the same info if it came in your car. Gordon

    Gordon,

Yes it is stamped on the bottom of the gearbox, COA/Kardex shows 901/54 #3282539
Edit (checked again) : gearbox stamp is 901/05 not stamped 901/54.

Need JonB to chime in here. My info shows 901/50-51-52-53-54, all to have 928xxxx serial numbers, with the 4th digit reflecting the last number in the type number, for 68 MY. 901/51=9281xxx, 901/54=9284xxx. Not sure if I have any answers for you. G

Killer, I agree with Gordon that a '68 901/54 transmission should have a serial number beginning 9284xxx.
Your serial number is in the standard 68L 902/1 transmission range.

    Jon,

Thanks, so there is something that needs to be solved :
    - COA/Kardex showing 901/54,
    - gearbox ration are short
    - correspond to the ratio shown on 901/54 Nurburgring table,
    - it is stamped on the gearbox.
    - SN is standard.

My car is currently within my mechanic to replace the engine. As soon as I can I'll take picture of the gearbox and will check all numbers.
Either there is en error on the SN or on the type or both are right and there is a mistake down in the factory (which may happen).

    Cheers.

COA Below which shows the number/type

I checked base on a picture, I do have a trans case stamped 901/05, with SN 3282539, BUT COA shows 901/54 type (Special Nurburgring) which correspond to the currently ratio in the gearbox.

This is the original transmission to my 911L 1968 confirmed by the Kardex and COA.
Have read other articles on the bird about this, which seems to have the same questions.

    Am just curious.
