This beautiful 1972 Porsche 911E Targa checks all the right boxes: exceptionally well-maintained with 11,600 original miles on the odometer, limited production as one of 861 produced that year, a prized model year—1972 with the oil tank filler cap on the rear fender, desirably optioned and in excellent unrestored condition. This car is of “E” specification and many knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts consider this engine as the sweet spot of performance, being faster in acceleration from 0-60 MPH than both the 911T and 911S. History has proven the wisdom of the 911E engine specification and now collectors are actively seeking them out. Ironically, they were not as popular as their T and S brethren making them extremely rare, especially when fitted to a Targa body style. In 1972, Porsche made a design change to their 911 by placing the dry sump oil tank further forward in an effort to improve weight distribution. This proved to be a one year only feature exclusive to the 1972 model year and is immediately identifiable by an external oil filler cap on the upper right side of the rear fender. Although this made sound engineering sense, it proved to be problematic when gas station attendants mistakenly tried to use it as a gas filler cap. This car is heavily optioned with a number of desirable features including Silver Metallic paint—two stage metallic paints were optional—custom “Red Leather to sample” interior with contrasting black carpet, 911S appearance group with bold aluminum rocker moldings, 911S front lip spoiler, wider rubber strips on the bumpers, forged anodized Fuchs alloy wheels, Bilstein gas pressure shock absorbers, tinted glass, Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM-FM radio and white fog lights mounted on the front horn grilles. This 911E Targa comes complete with owner’s manual, drivers manual, tools and a factory-issued Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

    FS: @Silverstone Auctions - 1973 Porsche 2.4L 911E Targa - parts car

Is a 911E really still an 'E' without the MFI 'E' engine? Buy it for a £1?

    Auction Description:

This 1973, left-hand drive, 911E Targa was imported by the current owner in 2013 from the sunny state of Florida, USA. He intended to restore the car himself, however, too many projects and not enough time have meant the car has remained untouched. Not much is known of its early life in America but there is a letter from HMRC showing all taxes and duties have been paid. In addition, there is a Florida Certificate of Title supplied with the car.

Offered without reserve and sold strictly as seen, the car needs a complete restoration. The front and rear wings, boot lid, doors and replacement bonnet are all included. In addition, the car comes with a genuine 911 T 2.4 litre engine from 1973, but this is obviously not the original unit. An ideal project for the keen restorer, we would strongly advise pre-sale viewings to establish an accurate evaluation of this 911 E. Prospective bidders are welcome to contact the office for further details.

This car has been seen here in April 2013 @$49k on ebay. Has been listed for a while on Hemmings. Restoration inaccuracies make it hard to justify a $139k asking price.

    Dealer's Description:

A rare opportunity to own an original 911 E 2.4. This car was found in a garage that was climate controlled and where it slept for over twenty years.

Purchased in 2003 by the founder of CPR Classic for its personal collection. With 76,000 original miles

The condition of this car when purchased was 95% paint and with all the original matching number parts, such as engine, transmission, all original body panels, 95 % original paint. Complete original interior, other than two front seats which were professionally restored using OEM German leather with NOS new foam to as new condition.

As this car had been sitting for 20 years and given the resources of our founder the following work was performed:

The engine and transmission were completely overhauled with all new internal components. The original numbers matching engine case was line bored and shovel pinned, oil gallies were sonic cleaned and the crank was polished to new condition, all bearings, pistons, cylinders, valves, valve seats guides, and cam shafts were replaced with either restored or OEM parts. Complete fuel injection system including injection pump, injection lines, fuel injectors, electric fuel pump, throttle bodies and hard were restored to new condition.

The complete bottom of the car was dissembled and thoroughly cleaned retaining its original factory finish. All suspension components were overhauled and all bearings, bushings and hardware were replaced. All A-frames, shock towers, trailing arms and brake backing plates were refinished as new. Every soft line was replaced with German OEM hoses and factory clamps, Resulting in a complete CPR restoration of all components attached to the belly pan.

All five numbers matching Fuchs were restored to factory new condition and five OEM Michelin 185 70 R 15 XWX were installed. The car comes with original restore jack and as new tool kit.

The result is an original paint car with original interior, other than seats. It has the charm of originality with the reliability of CPR certified restoration. Offers always welcomed.
