    Early 911 Engine Problem?

I took my car out this weekend since we had gorgeous weather in west michigan. The car was running beautifully, everything thing was running smooth and temperatures were great.

Then after a stop sign, she started to bog down and as I got into third gear, the car started too loose power. It came to a stop, and I was unable to start it again. The fuel pump was working when i turned the key but the engine wouldn't turn over. After I let it sit for 10 minutes it started up and i drove about 250 feet and it did it again. I let it sit for 20-25 mins and the car started right up and was drive-able until I made it home. On the drive home it was bogging down when I was accelerating but at a steady pace, the car was fine.

Would any of you guys know what this problem could be? Im thinking fuel, I replaced the fuel pump last summer. So Im not totally sure. Would the distributer have to do with any of this? Thoughts??
    Thanks,
    Evan

I would suspect first that the screen in the fuel tank is gummed up / clogged. Been there done that.

Easy to fix. Poke a hole in it from the top of the tank where the sensor goes in or take it out from the bottom where the lines attach. Obvious pros and cons to both approaches.

do the filter at the bottom of the tank first, as this one will starve the fuel pump. when you let it sit a few minutes fuel leaks through but when the pump starts up again it starves again.
Don't poke a hole in it please.

You may be suprised on how much rust can accumulate as these cars age. Once dried out, I had a about a gallon of rust powder in the tank of my 75. I took the tank to radiator shop, and had it cleaned out and sealed.

Also check and make sure the screen itself has not come apart and gotten pulled into the fuel line. Happened to me...

I took the tank out of my car yesterday, cleaned it out dumped the very small amount of rust in the tank out and I cleaned the front fuel filter. Today I put it back in and the car ran super smooth. I parked it, then 3 hours later I went for a 45 min drive and as i was turning onto the road that my house is on, the car lost power again.
I am at the same spot as I was before I dropped the tank. Does stoddard imports have front fuel filters? Should I blow air through the fuel lines? The car seems to be starving for fuel, Carb pressure is all spot on. Any other ideas? Thanks guys! I appreciate it!

Another thought...when it dies, is the fuel pump hot? That would also suggest an obstruction somewhere...the pump is having to work too hard. I burned through two pumps in very short order before I got mine figured out.

So the pump may be failing as it gets too hot...works again when it cools down and pressure may look fine with a cool pump. Of course the heat would still suggest an obstruction somewhere.

When you say 'front fuel filter', are you talking about the micromesh sock that covers the fuel intake probe in the tank? You should be able to see through that thing when it is totally clean. You can get a replacement front 'sock and intake probe' from various part houses.

If it were me, I would check the filter in the rear of the car. How long has it been since it was changed?

Carbs or f/i ? I had a similar problem with a fuel filter in the engine bay on my 72T f/i.. Changed the filter and solved the problem...also check the inlet on the carbs!Cliff
