    '69 Painting help needed

I'm restoring my 1969 911. The bodywork is done, but i need sopme more info about year correct painting. I want to make the painting 100% like in the factory. So as i know, that engine bay, the trunk and the bottom is black. The bottom has undercoating, but as i know in 1969 the trunk was satin black and there were some textured black paint (like undercoating) around the battery holders and the gas tank. The engine bay had this textured black paint too (is it undercoating?). What about the interior? Was is painted to black or just some parts of it? Can somebody help me with it? I'm interested in only the 1969 painting version.

I was just reading about this yesterday. Factory workshop manual vol. II, Supplement to Body section, page SB 1:

Doesn't answer all your questions, but info does match my 69 (aside from what is under the original carpets/rear seats which I haven't lifted to verify)

Thank you. It will help a bit. I hope my car will look the same as yours. Do you have some pictures of the engine? I would be happy to see an original engine.

In 69 the engine and front lid hinges were still painted black, not body color, that started in 70. The trunk undercoating does encompass the entire trunk, only about up to the level of the upper trunk floor.

I own two '69s, a 912 and 911T.....912's trunk, engine comp, and undercarriage completely original, 911T's trunk, engine comp. original, undercarriage just touched up.

Use Wurth water based Stone Guard. Goes on purple dries black......will duplicate original exactly. Water base is easy cleanup, but do not let it dry on a surface you do not want! Dries bullet proof! Play with the gun....you can get the thinner grainy texture they applied inthe trunk and engine compartment or the heavier ripple finish on the under carriage and gss tank by adjusting the pressure and heaviness of the application. The entire job will take five to six bottles and use one of their guns......if you buy enough bottles the Wurth rep will usually throw in the gun.

Interior is satin black paint, tunnel, footwells, dash, and inside of doors.. Remember there is a border of satin black that shows around the edge of the door upholstery cards...mask the 90 degree transition from inner surface to jamb, and spray inner surface.

Engine comp hss a very light dusting of under coating, more grainy than rippley......the coating was applied very lightly to the front and under where the sound pad would be, and ss yoou move toward the rear the coating was heavier with the rear engine mounts in the corners and the rear bulkheads being rippley.

The holes for the wiring passthrough plugs in the headlight buckets and on the sides of the engine compartment for the rear lights had a piece of 20mm masking tape applied so as to create a thinner flat surface for the plugs. When the tape was removed there was a square depression in the undercoating at these spots. Also the metal wiring tabs spot welded around places on the car were flat against the tub/body when sprayed..so that when they were bent up and crimped around harness t here was a "shadow" defect in the under coating where the tab had been flat. All those tabs have plastic sheathing on them....more Wurth money spent! Good luck. God is in the details!
