    Webasto heater switch mounting question

Happy New Year - first of all

I am restoring a 1970 2.2S, currently in final stage of putting everything together. The car is supposed to get a Webasto supplementary heater, although not originally equipped with it.

Now I have a question on the mounting position of the two-stage-turn switch on the dashboard. I assumed it goes between steering column and heater controls, see picture. Yesterday I tried to mount the switch but found that the switch is too long to fit behind the dash at this position. Actually, the switch is approx. 30-35 mm (1.5 inches) too long and thus collides with the sheet metal behind the dashboard.

I am now wondering whether this is the wrong switch (suitable only for SWB), or whether this is the wrong position.

    Anyone who can help?

    Thanks!
    Siegfried

I don't know if this helps but on my 65 the heater switch is mounted in the area by the cigarette lighter and the emergency flasher, left of the glove box. There may be more space behind in this areas of the dash.

Mounting the switch between the glove box and the cigarette lighter is certainly an option, thanks Haasman!
However, the original wiring looks like the switch is to be mounted underneath the dash rather than going into the trunk as the two switches and the lighter next to the glove box do. Also, what would be the purpose of the hole next to the steering column?

It's the one furthest to the right, next to the central hazard warning light switch. Wiring goes in the luggage compartment, and is on the same loom that supplies the control box and fuel pump.

Original position in unmolested 66 (67MY) swb coupe.

Mick, thanks for the picture - very nice car!
So it seems to be clear how it is original on an SWB.

    Same for LWB?
If the same for LWB cars, what is the hole next to the steering column for?

    User Manual description

Just checked the user manual. There is a picture where the switch for the auxiliary heating (Schalter fur Fremdheizung, no. 25 in the picture) is located next to the steering column!

So is this the wrong switch?

    Switch

seems like I could have answered the questions myself - just checked the parts catalog.

There is indeed another switch for the LWB's listed: part number 901 613 631 00
as compared to the SWB switch: part number 901 613 625 30

Anyone having the LWB switch and willing to sell?

    Thanks,
    Siegfried

I think if the three spots above the radio are taken, then the next legitimate place is what you point out -- between steering column and heater controls. Manual looks like it says the same thing.

FWIW, I have the below bumper fogs switch mounted in that spot. Here's a pic:

Thanks. Sorry for not reading your post more carefully. I saw the swb switch photo and didn't look more fully at the rest of it. Yes the switches are different, as you've found.
