    Noisy Door Stays

The door stays were replaced in both doors few years back. When opening and closing the doors, there are two very distinct metallic snapping sounds.

Is this normal, or do they need to be adjusted, lubricated or replaced to get rid of the noise?
    Cheers!

The pin holding the stay to the body might be worn out. I replaced mine with a 6mm bolt and nylock nut. As I tightened the nut the popping sound went away. A cheap fix if it works. What I did not check was to see if new pins are available.

    Good luck, Hugh

Went through the "Oh, bad door checks, I must replaced them" .... and Hugh was correct in my case on the '73. I removed the door panels, the door check, replaced it only to find it still made, as you describe a metallic snapping sound. If in doubt carefully put you hand on the connection point in the door jam.

A lot has been written on this. Sometimes it can be a broken weld holding the tab in the jam as well.

The small bolt and nylock nut solved this for me also.

I think you'll find out the part in the door frame where the pins goes....has become oval over the years.

Not much to do about that except 1) maybe the nyloks as mentioned above, or 2) putting new pieces in (not an easy or inexpensive job).

Thanks guys...think I'll try the bolt and nylock nut approach. Getting really annoyed every time I open or close the door and hear that damn metallic popping noise.
    Cheers!

Well...tried replacing the pin with bolt and nylock nut as suggested, no change. Still a loud metallic clicking/popping sound that happens twice each time door is opened and closed.

    Other suggestions?
    Cheers!

It's my understanding that there four reasons for the popping sound when opening a door-

-The door check inside the door is loose. Its mounting bolts need to be tightened
-The door check is failing and needs to be replaced.
-The "strap" from the above door check, where it connects to the door jam flange, is loose (and thus the suggestion of the bolt and nylock nut.
-The flange in the door jam is loosing its connection and needs to be re-welded.

    Am I missing anything?

The flange in the door jamb itself (read part of the body of the car, not part of the door assembly) has 'ovaled out' over time, so applying a clamping force with the bolt/nut combo can sometimes overcome this.
