Well, you never stop learning ... today a guy I know, Mr. Ivan Ben, proudly Czech/American, commented one of my pics and told me ... hey, your wiper arms are swapped ... the left goes to the right and viceversa ... I said ... you must have eagle eyes, how the hell you can tell that from a distorted dashcam clip where only one half of the right wiper is visible. But he was right ... never realised myself without his head-up, so I had to put them back where they belong immediately: 2 minutes of work and a drink to swallow my pride.

I did a little through the crossbar test fitting of the tank to filter to fuel pump lines today. It all comes out then I'll plumb in a 20.2 mm master cylinder and front brake lines.
Pulled the 'old girl' out of the shed, she's 50 yrs old in 3 weeks and I needed to see if she was still talking to me.

Keeping this going for motivation. This is about one nap's worth of work. My 18 month old daughter loves watching me in the garage, but I make significantly less progress when I'm trying to keep her away from the anti seize.

Thanks Chris! Looks like you have a big upgrade from stock... I bet it's a blast to drive. I was waiting on a few last bits that arrived on Friday. Was able to get the front back together this weekend. Still have to finish up front brake lines and then on to the rear.

The pulleys are all stock size however, the crank pulley is an aftermarket aluminum Supertec version. I may end up replating my original and just using that though.
The dash treatment idea came from the factory ‘69S that raced in the Acropolis rally and was eventually upgraded to S/T spec.
At this point, I need to weld in seat belt / harness mounts and install the perlon felt carpet and then the interior should be complete.

Ya done good, Tom.
Just got back from the RGruppe Treffen. Just short of 2500 miles (.2% were at Willow Springs Raceway) round trip. Had a great time and my wife enjoyed it, too. Sure. I will put some miles on them during the weekend ... today I found wet road and with new tires it's not really indicative of the potential. Meanwhile, (excellent on snow) winter's Klebers found place on newly refurbished 02/1974 ATS ...

Post-weekend scriptum:
Didn't put as many miles as I wished but ... so far so good! These GoodYear have quite a soft compound, less understeering in negotiating the bend compared to former Pirelli P6000 N1 (same size) and much lower price: I'd say it's good value for money! The tires follow the road imperfections quite a lot, but they are very communicative to driver. Mayby they have less grip on traction when the engine "is in the revs" but they are still in the "running in" period.

Trying an alternate set-up for a couple of chronometers / chronographs within the hashtray slot for Biancaneve. Advantages: can be operate by both pilot and co-pilot; does not require drilling and quickly deployable on other 911s. Disadvantage: less practical for co-pilot. Measures taken, now need to find a builder :)

I had fluid leaking from between the engine and transmission. The engine and transmission seals were bone dry. It turns out the pivot ball under the shift fork was a little loose. Now it's time to reinstall. I'm heading to California in a week for LUF8.
Love the coil-overs, Chris.
Thanks Jens. The car should be back on the road tomorrow.
So, the concept basically works ... I've done a "crude" trial using a wooden platform screwed to the chrono holding plate and held in position with the help of a couple of self-locking nylon straps. The combo works pretty well in normal driving conditions ... vibrating a little on the city cobblestone.

Same here, I ended up changing to Bridgestone RE-71RS because the A048s aren't available anymore here. Looked like they got replaced with a new, higher number. I think because SCCA has some rule that makes the <200 treadwear rating DOT tires not in demand anymore.

Checked compression of 911/83 engine
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FmdD0vRX...g&name=900x900
I don't think I've ever posted in this thread before. But I will now probably post here frequently. Last fall, racing at Ozarks International Raceway, I missed a shift and damaged the 2.0 911 engine of my 1965 911 racecar pictured in my avatar. My mechanic's cost estimate for a rebuild was more than I want to spend, so he and I agreed I'd do it myself under his guidance (and so far, he's been very happy to answer my frequent questions, even to lending me specialized tools). My intent was this would be a long-term project. However, on Friday I demolished my knee in a skiing accident, so now I'm going to have a lot of free time to work on the engine once I get through the first couple of weeks post-op. Look on the bright side, I say. So, yesterday I took apart the camshaft ends and removed the chain housings. Attachment 588435

I like the voltmeter!
Visited the hallow grounds of Ed Pinks today to make some power runs on their chassis dyno. Touring that place was like a kid at Disneyland - incredible history there. I saw many motors being assembled, from motors for Singer, Emory Motorsports and even a 917 flat 12 for Seinfeld. Crazy. Sad part is LA is forcing them to move so they can demolish their building to build bus stops for the Olympics. Glad I got to go to the original shop before they relocate.
Now the fun part. My 2.5 put out a very surprising and impressive 250hp and 232tq at the crank (accounting for 15% drivetrain loss); 217hp and 201tq at the wheels. Torque curve is exactly what I wanted when I chose my cams and the HP comes on much lower than a peaky cam would - yes, I lost some peak HP with these cams, but didn't want to rev high to get torque and HP out of the motor - this thing is really drivable through the streets and freeways here in SoCal. Still can't believe these numbers out of a 2.5 liter that doesn't have modS or more aggressive cams in it (I went with Mod Solex). With my car weighing 2,133lbs, this is a power to weight ratio of 11.7, or 10.2 if measuring power at the wheels. Not bad for a mild and very drivable hotrod with only 2.5 liters. MFI is pretty well dialed in - curves were mostly smooth.
Attachment 589560
Attachment 589561
Wow, that's a lot of torque for a 2.5L. Do you have a build thread somewhere?
Thanks - yes, the torque is exactly what i was looking for when i built my motor. here is my build thread - warning, it is very long!
https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...rod-build.html
Here are the specs to my motor:
- 2.54 MFI Longstroke
- 9.5:1 compression
- Single plug, stock ignition
- 87.5 slip-in LN Nickies cylinders (this gets me to 2.54 liters with no boring needed)
- JE pistons
- Dougherty Racing DC30 Cams (which is a mod Solex cam - see below for specs). Many discussions with John Dougherty to arrive at this decision based on where I want my power range.
- Intake and exhaust bored to S/RS specs (36i/35e)
- Heads were ported and polished by Ollies
- Case was done by Ollies - oil by pass mod, inserts, align bore, etc
- Throttle bodies by Matt Blast, stacks by Aaron Burnham (bored to S/RS specs)
- Modified MFI Pump to match motor specs by Mark Jung
- Stock rods, but they were balanced along with the crank, flywheel, pressure plate, etc by Ollies
- ARP rod bolts and flywheel bolts
- Mahle Clevite Calico rod bearings
- Oil pump is Glenn Yee Motorsports GT SERIES 1 port and polish
- SSI heat exchangers and Dansk sport muffler (dual center out)
I was hoping for something in the 190-200hp range with a broad, usable power range - and finally, I wanted it to be reliable and very drivable. So far, this is how things have shaken out - but with more power and torque than i expected :)
Being a long stroke improves torque, as well as the increased compression ratio, and I was careful not to over cam the motor -- based on where i expected to spend most of my time in the RPM range. this is not a race motor where i would be at high RPMs and speeds regularly. so for this reason it does run out of breath after 6k RPM - but everything below this is strong, usable power. This is another reason I was ok using stock rods (rebuilt and balanced though) - this is not meant to be a screamer motor.
The data for peak torque and HP were approximations based on my research - however, the dyno showed different results for my car.
Attachment 589610
Nice, I'm surprised there's no crazy race engine stuff going on. My (supposed) 2.7RS spec is getting a bit long in the tooth. It's got a murky history, definitely with some abuse in the past. Current diagnosis is a worn MFI space cam (groove worn into the part of the fuel map I cruise in) so it's looking like it's time to consider building an engine in a couple years. I'm surprised you can get so much torque from a 2.5 liter (more than the 911/83 specs) without resorting to anything crazy. I'm considering what to build- 2.2S, 2.5SS, 2.7RS, etc. I think I'll likely go with some sort of EFI or M-EFI, and figured I would twin plug it while I was in there. I like my 911/01 gearbox though so in the name of preserving it's longevity I'm thinking of targeting a smaller but hotter engine that will give me similar torque but better fuel economy (with the EFI at least) and be "rowdier" when I want.
Drove her for the longest most spirited drive of the season. Good news - no issues and the high Idle when hot has disappeared. She ran like a Top.

I got 28 mpg at 80 to 90 mph Rennsport to Golden, Colorado with a 2.4 POLO (4) and EFI. And now I'm going from 42# (440cc's) injectors to 28.7 (310cc's) injectors. At sea level maybe 30 or 36#ers might be better. I had to back off the fuel in high load and ran too rich under 1/4 throttle. I think I'll get better low load drivability and maybe mileage. Maybe 30 mpg cross country. EFI is nice. I can be on Vail Pass with my phone plugged into my laptop, my laptop into the ECU and a software person tuning it from anywhere in the world. I do the minor stuff myself. I'll install the injectors this weekend.

Actually a 69 POLO car I'm developing. I'm working on how I want the dash gauges set up. One is a outside temp gauge, and the other I'm trying to decide on a triple or quad. I'm leaning toward a triple as VDO actually made them for the 904. I don't think they ever made a quad like mine. I can see a 60's 911 owner going to a Porsche dealer and buying one. I just bought one of these. https://vehiclecontrols.com/shopping...ure-gauge-kit/
North Hollywood back in 2010 took one of these and built a far left dash outside temp gauge for my car. Here is a picture. The new gauge will be white where mine is green, no inner chrome ring, and have a red needle.
I'm also hunting for a left side of the gauge oil pressure unit like the other picture. Anyone have one or two they'd sell? Anyone ever see a right side temp unit?
I'd love a left side that went to 140 pounds.
The challenge with the triple and quad is if you like a 350 to 370 mm steering wheel the 9 and 12 o'clock units are blocked. I'm working on a solution.
Replaced my almost 40-year-old fake coco mats with real ones…

Went to the gas station.
My '69T recently developed the very annoying habit of beeping its horn when the wheel was turned, mostly to the left. I replaced the piston contact; no success. I replaced the rubber bell thing; no success. I carefully cleaned the circular copper contact ring; no success. Somebody over on the Bird suggested making sure all the internal screws were tight; SUCCESS! Now I can drive again without blasting random drivers and pedestrians out of their iPhone reveries.
We all love those little victories.
While dealing with my leaking oil line, I also needed to address an issue I was having with my clutch cable. I was needing to readjust my clutch cable every couple thousand miles. Was initially thinking it was stretching after initial installation (it was brand new). However my clutch pedal went to the floor with zero tension the last time I moved the car (lucky it was moving the car in the garage to fix the oil line leak).
What I found was the two adjustment nuts were essentially stripped and pushed to the end of the clutch cable. I fully restored/rebuilt this car and reused all of my original fittings/hardware after being blasted and zinc/chromate treated. I am wondering if the threads on these nuts were bad after treatment or if there was damage from Hydrogen Embrittlement? Or I could have installed the wrong nuts, but seemed like that would have been obvious and not held for nearly 6k miles.
I ordered new nuts (matching part # in PET) from Sierra Madre. They arrived and I tried to install them but they did not want to go smoothly onto the cable end. The size of these nuts are M7 1.0 - so I used the appropriate size die to chase the threads. Surprisingly the threads were in really bad shape. After cleaning up the threads, the nuts went on smoothly and I have readjusted the clutch per spec. Shifts beautifully!
It’s been an eventful two weeks with my bone-stock ‘69 911S. I’ve been having MFI troubles for the past several months…rough running, smoke, reluctance to start or idle. For some reason my MFI rack was constantly getting “stuck”. I finally did what I should have done months ago…I pulled the fuel sender unit and peered into the fuel tank…what I saw shocked me. The inside of the tank was covered in rust and a sticky brown ooze (see photo below). The strainer was also totally shot.
I immediately ordered a new Dansk fuel tank from autohausAZ ($289), along with new fuel lines, strainer and a new fuel filter.
I also sent the MFI pump to Marty Neubauer at H & R Fuel Injection (Bohemia, NY) who cleaned, tested and calibrated the pump and returned it to me a week later.
I cleaned the plugs, checked the points and reassembled the entire fuel system, which wasn’t especially difficult (I can now remove or install an MFI pump in about 45 minutes). After crossing my fingers and cranking the car for several seconds the little 2 liter six came to life and idled smoothly. After warming up, the car drove flawlessly, revving eagerly all the way to redline. I’m absolutely thrilled that I was able to get to the bottom of my MFI troubles.
The moral of this story: I should have listened to the experts here on this forum (Ed Mayo and others) and checked the condition of my 55-year-old fuel tank.
Thanks for listening…
Alan

In Ed we trust. He's been there, done that, got the t-shirt, wore it out and threw it away.;)
Glad to hear about the quick turn-around on the pump. Many places that deal with mechanical FI pumps are quite capable. Mostly they end up being dirty. Cleaning the injectors and calibrating the usual fix.
Along the lines of "cleaning", a friend with a hot 3.2 SS had his injectors clog up from plating debris which shouldn't have been in the lines, however, we believe plater didn't take care to keep the inside of the lines out of plating process by plugging them. Ended up having to replace them with all new lines. PITA.
The well known shop/engine building shop found it pretty quickly it but were surprised by the plating contamination inside the lines which did the injectors no favors.
Take it apart today to: Rebuild calipers, clean/turn rotors, clean/inspect/repack bearings, replace tie-rods (upgrade to turbo?), install new Koni in the struts, replace ball joints, remove Rack&Pinion, clean/lube replace boots, remove cv joints and clean, inspect, replace or repack, new boots….. and all the other stuff as needed when ancillary parts get touched.

Let the guys at Scott's do their thing. New brakes (including converting to a dual-system), fluids, new heat exchangers, muffler, windshield... You know. A Thursday.
Test fit the engine tin today, now off to be powder coated.
After 5 years of research, planning, accumulating parts, restoration, spending money....and then spending more money, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel on my motor build.
Tuesday, I drove it for the first time - ever.
Took it back to where it lived for the previous 58 years...
way to go........
Enjoy the ride, must feel amazing.
Heat Exchangers on....getting close!
I am busy getting acquainted with a 70k mile pampered ‘71 911T. I’ve fixed a few things, pulled out some alarm wiring and the alarm horn.
This car has S trim, gauges, suspension, leather sport seats, 5 deep sixes. Can somebody rotate this?

Pushed her out into the sun for the first time in about 15 years. Finished the motor build (still had a few things to do when I took this pictures, just thought it was kinda cool). Just waiting the engine tin to get back from the powder coater and a few small other things. Hope to have her up and running in June.
That'll be nice on a drive to Valdez when you get her up and running.
I had bungs welded on both heat exchangers. Duel AFR gauge should show up tomorrow to help with tuning the 69 Targa.
Getting closer. Good chance the MFI pump will go to get the space cam altered to send more fuel from half throttle to full throttle. The engine makes 240 hp to the wheels at 17 to 1. I'm thinking there's another 20 to 30 hp to be had.
Beautiful car JFP .... '69 softy in leaf green ?
Changed the spark plugs. Now the oil pressure gauge is inop. Have to figure out what I did wrong!
Today I put a big box of spares into the frunk of my '69T in preparation for our road trip down Route 66 next week. That Marelli dizzy takes all special kit.
Installed replica Recaro sport seats. Huge improvement!
