Cars get repainted for a lot of reasons- vandalism, rock chips, angry ex's, hail damage, or just an owner that is extremely picky anne wants the car to look perfect. I (too) believe that a top quality repaint will not devalue a car. When the time comes for my six to get paint, it will be a total disassembly, media blast and paint. However not there yet. :(
Keith mentions a return of 30 cents on the dollar for hotrodded 914's... but that's probably true of most rods. SCM's market guide is pretty light regarding valuation from what we've been seeing though; a good 914/6 for $15,000 would be considered a steal. But you're right that modded cars are embraced and encouraged... the number of teeners carrying powertrains far beyond what they were delivered with is staggering. I don't think any other Porsche model is regularly modified to the degree, maybe because teener fans are often VW guys.
An example of Mr. Martin's theme, offered for $49,000... cost $110,000 to build. Impractical in every way. I like it.

Rust. Rust is not kind to these beasts. In 71, the pans of all 911's received the galvanization treatment. In 76 the entire car got it. Never on a 914. There are notorious areas (battery tray and the hell hole below it, longs, etc.) that afflict "most" 914's.Quote:

Done properly, a repaint should never devalue a 914. Most are in need of some type of care and, if you can prove the bodywork has been done properly, it just shows the car was cared for.
My entire car was soda blasted and repainted. Not much rust but, the paint was tired and it "needed" flares! :D

My 914 was damaged within a year of being new at an event and then repainted the current color...I'm really not sure what that does to the value. I guess it's all in the eyes of the person who owns it or wants to buy it.
