The more I look at that the more it REALLY puzzles me. I'm maybe shooting for stolen six with a VIN swap. Even the VIN has the green though.
Everything about that car says "six" except the VIN tags.
Wow...

Eric, swapped VIN (not swapped drivetrain) is exactly what I thought too, and looking through the photos it sure LOOKS like it IS a 6.
Tracing it would be nearly impossible. Two people got ripped off with that one. So, what now for whoever takes it home? :(
I've worked on one 1972 914/6 ... it was more 4 cylinder than 6 cylinder.
It had a 914/4 column and ignition switch setup (unlike this car), but it is best described as a 4 cylinder car from the front bumper to the firewall, then it was a 914/6, then it became a 4 banger again. The /6 part of the car seemed very much an afterthought ... but I believe it had a /6 VIN.
I will check my records to see if I can find the VIN, but I wouldn't be surprised if the '72 /6s had /4-style VINs. From my singular experience I can say the '72 /6 was unlike any other /6 I've worked on ... an albatross amongst the odd birds that 914s already are.
Sixer VIN's all begin 914 with three intermediate digits before chassis number: "043" for 1970, "143" for '71, and "243" for 1972...
Like all things Porsche... it's about using up spare parts:
Have a lot of engines left over from the 356? 912.
Have some 2.0 6's left over from the failed 6 program? Throw them in the 72 chassis and wrap it up.
Have a bunch of type 4 2.0's laying around from the 914 program. 912E.
When you get down to the bare tub, a 914 is pretty much a 914 with the exception of the engine mounts. The left mounted ignition was one of the more "quaint" calling cards for a 6.
What now for that Oklahoma City 6? Hard to say... you can buy 6 VIN's from AA. That crook has openly advertised those for sale for a while now. I asked the poster to add a picture of the chassis number that is stamped in the rear trunk floor. That should help us narrow down what the actual VIN was when it left the factory.
From Mark Epstein:
<<The same car sold on Pelican last year for ~$5,500. I talked to the guy. He's a small shop that resells cars. I think these are even the same pics from the previous sale. It was pretty much decided that this was a rebuilt 6 on 4 chassis.
Makes sense if you total your 6 to rebuild on a 4 chassis. I don't think anyone is claiming it's a real 6.

Front and rear pix both show the car had AC at one time. Where do you mount the compressor on a 914/6?
For some reason those links both just take me to the main Pelican forum page.
