When the story that says “coming soon”
of the shiny blue one is completed by Canepa I suspect the marketing tag line “because you’re worth it” may prove that very apt for it — not just in view of that rather bullish asking price mentioned above.


Initially my reaction was worth more now back to Dalmatian and black without the rather bling orange additions.

But maybe it isn’t for reasons I’ll explain….

There is likely a reason for the one time seemingly garish choice of that blue and orange paint with orange seats — it could be because a previous owner also raced the McLaren GTR in this darker blue variation of the gulf livery.

It is a small community in professional meets well heeled amateur racer motorsport here in U.K. Coincidentally a previous owner of my RS was heavily involved in the McLaren F1 road car becoming a race car as GTR (Gordon Murray no less personally confirmed to me that he and Ron Dennis had arm twisted to reluctantly allow the F1 road car to be used as endurance racer by the PO of my RS). I’m in contact with my RS’ PO who was centrally involved with the McLaren car pictured. Obviously on the gulf livery used on some of the McLaren GTR has a similar dark blue ( darker than old Gulf blue) but still with blue/orange contrast colour scheme.

Let me be clear, I can’t be sure the blue and orange are due to both the RS and the McLaren F1 both being owned by same guy but what’s the chances the reason for the unusual colour scheme on RS is related to that? I know for a fact the RS offered at Canepa was owned by the gentleman who raced a Gulf liveried GTR. If as I suspect there is a connection between his choice of colour scheme of the two has something been lost when taking the orange detail away during the very restoration? Not my place to bandy private individual's names from endurance racing scene around on open www so don’t intend to name the people I’ve alluded to but feel the one time distinctive colour scheme probably had some significance so is appropriate to mention the possibility on a thread that is about RS for sale.

Generally I like 73 RS original or at least authentic if restored but sometimes “as they were once at a snapshot of time” where there is an interesting reason for choice can give pause to my default preferences. Each owner’s prerogative to do as they please ultimately do not criticising either but I wonder if still had the unusual albeit to some a bit garish scheme it might it have some cachet appeal commensurate with what said in prior post to be quite a punchy ask?

At that price I’m not in the game so the value and preference is for someone else to decide.

I explained on post #2240 black Carrera side stripe was a factory permitted option only part way through the RS production year so probably not on a Dalmatian car when this late 500er serie car was built. Not did 7&8 fuchs which were no m-number option only around the spring, so if the goal of the restoration eas to revert to as factory new then maybe as presented now with these (plus its probably on other ways better than new ) that is possibly not as it was originally when leaving factory — asinine that was the goal? ;)

My previous 73RST in Dalmation blue did not have the Carrera side decals. It was mine in the mid 90’s and although it had been ‘refreshed’ by the previous fastidious owner it was done so, as near as possible, to its factory spec.

Steve, I recall going to DK showroom and then heading to the farm where a lot of their stock was kept. I even recall the colleague who was with me that day for the off site excursion but recalling the exact year - nah... It was a striking combination that some folks would not have appreciated - don't think it was UK registered either ... I should have bought it then ... I'd probably have been shot by my long suffering better half ...

Good to hear from you especially as can put a face to name now. Been raining and blowing just like when I saw you with these recent two storms!

Seem to recall your first RS was a pretty early RHD one — notable for being the only RS ever sold new in Scotland Glen Henderson if I recall that correctly? I have a question that I’ll pm you with as I appreciate your knowledge and ownership of RS that goes back a long time too. You’ve seen details that often get erased as more and more RS get full nut and bolt jobs where original factory finish (warts and all) get erased. Want to compare notes and get your thoughts on something if that’s ok?

No problem Steve. You are spot on with the details of my Dalmation Touring. The only 73RS ever registered in Scotland. Lovely example. Hard to believe it was almost 30 years since I sold it.

M471 sport vin 196 sold 880usd with auctioneer’s note that it might have restamped engine. Probably affected the price. Unlikely to have had 7&8 Fuchs when left factory if delivered in December 72
