Here is a pic from the Carrera RS book showing the development of the RSR features. This car was renumbered from a 72 ST into 911 360 0002, which later became the Martini #3 press car and #107 at the 73 Targa Florio. It shows the front oil cooler, with what looks like somewhat roughly hand laid fiber glass surrounding the oil cooler. This car with the rudimentary rear spoiler ran at the Austria Ring in July 72, so we know that the factory had by then felt that the front location was a superior location for an oil cooler, especially when they needed the driver's side fender for the transmission cooler. This car still used the steel rear ST bumpers without bumperettes, widened to fit the crude flares.
We don't have documentation when the factory started offering these front mounted oil coolers for the STs, but we know that during the 72 GT season, some STs were using this configuration.
