Porsche 914/6 collectability

I agree the silver car on ebay was much better than the white one on Pelican. I was thinking it would have gone up to almost 50K :confused:

Hard to tell with just pictures though, might have been something keeping the price down.

I bet the white one ends up on a boat to the Father land.

I'll offer up a couple of theories on why silver might be desirable. Not necessarily in order.
1) Silver is the "traditional" Porsche racing color. Besides, it looks good.
2) Silver paint does not stand the test of time very well. Especially from that era. Any car in that color which still has it's original paint that still looks good was an exceptionally well taken care of car.

Coincidentally, silver is one of the colors I wanted when I was looking for a sixer. That plus green. I ended up with tangerine because that's what was available locally so I could research the car's history and get to know the previous owner, a bit.

Just my .02 and I'm certainly no expert.

So here’s my story. Back in late 1971 I sold my 356SC and decided to look for a 914-6. To my discouragement they were an overnight “must have car” Porsche had discontinued them and many of us realized how rare of a car they were / are. After months of searching and procrastination I resigned myself to settle on a Black with silver stripe 914-6 that was offered for sale by Bob Zulkowski (sp?) A Porsche Parade winner but it was also a salvaged title car, therein my dilemma. I didn’t really want a black car (Porsche never offered a 914-6 in Black) it was also branded for life as salvaged return, but it was a very nice car and I was really getting tired of looking at a bunch of really rough cars. Well, my procrastination caused the car to slip thru my fingers, someone else bought the car the day before I made the commitment. I saw the car and it’s new owner Rick Ford at the PCA Auto-X that weekend where we compared notes and it turns out that he passed up a 914-6 at a Porsche dealership in Walnut Creek to buy Bob’s car because he really wanted a Black 914-6. That’s all I needed to hear, I found the nearest pay phone, called the dealership and asked if they had a 914-6 on the lot. They did and I told the salesman it was sold and I would be there within the hour to buy it. I also inquired what color it was, he said it was orange. Crap! The one factory color I really didn’t want. No offense to Signal Orange owners but it’s just not my thing, I almost didn’t go to buy it. Upon arriving at the dealership I saw a Tangerine 914-6, my heart sank. If only… The salesman saw me checking out the car and approached me, asked if I was Bernie and then asked how I liked the car. All I can say is Frigging salesmen! How can they sell Porsche’s and not even know the correct color of the car? It was a dealership demo, bought the car on the spot and still own her today and still love the color!

I agree Raj, Bernie's story is very atypical.

So, has there been discussion regarding number of cars vs colors? It seems as though well over half of the 6 production was Tangerine? What's with that?

Not likely; until recently the cars haven't been worth enough to justify hoop jumping of that nature. Oh, you're being facetious aren't you?

I was on a trip as a kid with my parents in SoCal back in 1970 or 1971 and we needed to get some points for the distributor in our VW 411L. We stopped at a VW-Porsche dealership in the Ventura or Santa Barbara area to get them, and I recall climbing a fence to count the 914-6's that were in their storage yard, and I counted 13 of them (they were all facing away from me, so I could see the rear badge). Dad doesn't recall ever selling a 914-6, his comment was that the 911T wasn't that much more money.

Side note, I saw Bernie's 6' a couple of weeks ago, and it looks absolutely as good as that picture...

I've owned 2 914-6's and wish I had kept the first one (the Matsuda collection car), but I got very good money for it back in 1990 and it's still in the same family that bought it from me (the guy who bought it from me was Joel Horvitz a well known east coast Porsche 4 cam guy who's family sold the Spyder he had to Seinfeld when Joel passed away in 2006. Joel's son Bryan kept the 914-6).

I keep looking for one, but the prices have put me out of the market for now till I sell something. Note that I also had the chance to see Raj's blutorange car, and that car is "quite nice".

Interesting POV, I was told here in SoCal the opposite was true. We were told Porsche couldn't sell the 911T 's after the introduction of 914-6, so they stopped making them. Which from a marketing standpoint makes a bit more sense. I believe the difference in $$ getween a 914 & 914-6 was $500.00. But, maybe Bernie remembers exactly the amt.
