Hope you do get back into an air cooled 911. A late 80's Carrera would be a great choice, but no doubt hard to enjoy were you are. Now that the frothy, speculative phase is over for 911s, prices may actually start to make sense in the future again (maybe).
I would not say exactly so.
That the market is not ready to pay high prices as presented in their catalog by auction housse is a true statement. That the dealers whose prices are aligned on such catalog prices do not sell is also true. But at Retromobile there are RS's that have been sold at reasonable prices. RS's have now to face the sort of careful buyers that before spending very high prices want to know what they are buying. Means they want quality (not only engines, coach work etc..., but also clear and true pedigrees) and they want to compare with other cars : Ferrari's, Mercedes, etc ... Walking around Retromobile stands shows that Ferrari's were sold, not so much Porsche's. Does not mean that their price is bound to go down, at least now. Means that RS's have to compete with other opportunities offered to that sort of buyers.
Other remarkable 911's are still good sellers because they have not reached the buyers that the RS's have reached these last months.

Yes, I think we share the same opinion. Going forward there will be more thoughtful discernment on the part of buyers. The prices paid for an RS (and probably other models as well) will reflect more the condition of the car (originality will tend to command higher prices) and documented history. Not every RS will be priced 'around $750K' just because of the VIN.

If it's a touring 700€ and fully restored to the original it's not bad. I'm on one for 450€ But will need about $200US to make it perfect.
