This is interesting....like MR I thought all the bodies where fabbed at Karmann and shipped to Porsche for final assembly of suspension, drive train, etc.
Are you talking about the firewall mounting area where the 914-6 has it's front engine mount?
the 914-6 has a 3 point mounting system and the 914-4 has a 4 point mounting system
metal was a hair thicker to support tork from the engine, same pricciple was use in reverse for early FACTORY RACE CARS, EXAMPLE HEAD LIGHT BUCKETS WERE HALF THICKNESS
I suspect that the build sheet for the six called out a different construction in the engine mount area.
Which gets back to the question - Did Karmann know where individual bodies were destined at some point *during* the assembly process? That adds cost to the build compared to making them all the same. For example: AFAIK, all 911/912 bodies got clutch cable tubes. Even if they ended up with a Sportomatic.Quote:

I mentioned the front engine mounts...it seems these would have been installed at Karmann before going to Wolfsburg or Zuffenhausen since they are painted the same as the body color and the ones I have repaired.. the color goes all the way to bare metal and spot welds on the 914-4 mounts. Like Scott mentioned probably a build sheet spec...anyone got a build sheet....
it is known that the first 20 karmann 914-6 bodies are the same production run, karmann #11 and #12 became 914-6 # 0012 & 0011 in reverse order, porsche grabed a body and started producing 914-6's, it is known that the first 52 914-6's had different front fenders, do not know if first 52 cars had the same protype parts that are on 914-6 # 914 043 0011 & 914 043 0012 , both cars are in private hands in the usa one in california and one in chicage. karmann bodies # 0001 thru 0010 could have used for certification use, one could assume that 914-6 cars were assigned to the porsche factory as they had different motor mountings, do not know about 914-4 cars

It's my understanding that the thickness of the metal wasn't an issue in production. GT's were (if I'm recalling this correctly) welded up right along side any other 6 or 4 on the line yet, they had parts stamped, stacked up and available in a thinner gauge (or thicker in the case of a -6 firewall section). The GT's had writing on the body panels to note their future destination in life. Supposedly the metal was stacked side by side and they used a gauge from a different stack for a different chassis. Check the panel writing on the Moss/Brumos car of recent.
Thinking about it that way makes perfect sense but, I'm not certain of the accuracy of that statement. Third party and beer was involved.
Hi- Looking for the current owner of 914-6 VIN# 9140431677. Somehow we wound up with this in a pile of parts that came with a project, looking to return to owner if the "6" still exists.
