Wow nice sixes !
Looks like your orange six was built 31 cars behind mine !
Whats the yellow ones number?
rarest 914-6 production cars would be early production cars under # 52, these cars had different front fenders,# 33 is indeed a special car, even in amoung the 914-6 group
porsche 914-6 #914 043 0011 was produced some time in september 1969 as a production car to verify personal and work station requirements, shown in october at boston car show 1969. looking at numbers 0011 and 0033 cars 914 word is in disput as to the #'s produced, as they show 29 cars built in 1969.
My understanding was that #33 was officially imported by VW Canada; and perhaps the only 914/6 imported by them. However, it was never registered/licensed for street use. The strange thing is that VW Canada did not import any 914's for general sale until late 1971. There were very few 1971 models seen here, but lots of 1972 models. VW Canada did import Porsche from 1959, so I find it strange that they passed on the 914 for 2 model years.
Hi Raj,
You didn't answer your private messages anymore...?
According to Harry, Fritz was a VW Canada employee and had been racing a 911 for some time. He felt the 914/6 would be a good choice, so VW Canada imported it for him, and Fritz only used it as a race car, so it was never registered. It turned out that a completely stock 914/6 did not do well. Harry was offered the car, and eventually accepted. Harry planned from the outset to turn it into a GT; part of the deal was to get some of the GT parts (I assume through VWC) such as fenders and the big fuel tank. After some research the tank was cancelled since a fuel cell was required for IMSA. That also changed the GT oil cooling system since it would interfere with the fuel cell. So Harry's approach to a GT was unique. He apparently ditched the stock motor and acquired a 906 crate engine from the US. I'd really like to know the details of the engine currently in the car.
I've no idea why VWC did not import the 914, and find it very strange. All the 914/6 that I know of in Canada were imported by individuals with this one exception. I began collecting info on the 914's after getting my first one in 1975, and can think of only one 1971 914/4 that I believe VWC may have imported. There were lots of 1972 MY cars though, and lots of VW dealers in small towns sold them. I remember seeing a list of Porsche imported (#'s per year by model IIRC) that showed the first year of 1959, but no 914 in 1970 or 1971. So I'm pretty confident that no 914/6 were imported by VWC for regular sale. Yes, I think we are on the same page. I am only trying to clarify some minor points. However, I do not claim to know anything for certain and would appreciate being corrected where possible; memories of 40 years ago are starting to fade.
Question for the group....what is a 71 914-6 going for now? Excellent condition, matching numbers, motor rebuilt to 2.5 approx. 1500 miles ago. I know it's a tough question but i'm looking for ballpark answers.
Thanks much. I haven't been paying attention to the market lately.
Every time I see a white 914-6 for sale I keep hoping it's my dad's old car with A/C. Had a "bubble" in the firewall right behind the left seat for the compressor.
