Eric... better over here
GREAT title !!!! .... That REALLY says it....
If you have ANY internet presence the service, shipping, and feedback expectation for most is the same as Amazon...
We get that on our Registry home page 'Shop' orders.....
What most of them don't understand is Amazon doesn't have any idea WHAT their selling.... where it goes... and how it works !!!!
Good thread...
The perceived immediacy of internet commerce has spoiled us all.
and get off your phone, and my lawn...
As a minor seller on eBay, I've really had to adjust my practices on shipment expediency (as the buyer is favored over the seller in terms of feedback). I do have to plan out my listings before I post them so that when the item sells I am fully prepared to ship it. Takes a little practice but it's old hat now. I suggest a comment on your web site that indicates "I ship every Saturday" or "Tracking number provided three days after order is placed" just to be transparent and manage expectations. Your advantage, Erik, is that you sell items that few others are able to offer.
Here's how I would word your disclaimer:
"Because of the specialized nature and limited availability of the parts we sell please expect a minimum of 2-3 days before your item is shipped. If this isn't satisfactory we would suggest you buy the part somewhere else and find some help in the area of self control and patience."
I am constantly reminded (and reminding others) of the Heinz ketchup ad campaign:

That's what I call a good advertising.
I am constantly bombarded with requests to send a picture of a part I have after I've just given a detailed description over the phone.
It is a time consuming waste of frigging time and I can only assume that the person doesn't trust my description or that they don't think I know what I am doing. This just plain pisses me off.
I make every effort to ship on the day I promise and that is , most often, the day the order comes in.
Requesting a tracking number is another way to piss me off and waste my time. After all, I just told the person that the part has been shipped and it will arrive on a certain day. Leave me alone and don't bug me until the day passes and the precious part has not arrived. That precious part is often a bolt or a fastener that I spent an hour looking for and charged the princely sum of $5.00.
I am not a fan of the new way of doing business and can't wait to be retired!

If you are having that much trouble dealing with the customer, you need to be charging more to offset the inconvenience. I know problem customers rarely get fired, but you should at least be getting paid to deal with the hassle.
Just tell your customers you ship by Canada Post. Period!

Now THAT is de-cceleration, right? Ain't anticipation the greatest of all joys?
P.S. I guess nobody would even bother caring about a 3-day delay on tracking #'s ;-)

Indeed. The internet has compressed time, compressed geography, compressed business (a few monolithic category killers - goodbye Mom, goodbye Pop), and compressed brains (no explanation needed).
It’s disappointing to me as I was there at the creation and was so idealistic about “power to the people”. Talk about naive.

I hate Amazon. :) I only use them as a search engine of sorts. I would rather buy from the original vendor. I have found their packing to be substandard more than once. When I complained, nothing. Plus, have you ever seen the owner? You talk about cray-cray!!! Then deals with the CIA and sitting on a Pentagon board???
Erik is awesome. He has gone out of his way to supply me with some rare original parts!!! Plus I bet he doesn't laugh like this!!!
And that is why I do not have a job dealing with the general public. It is just not the internet. John Q Public has been an ass for a LONG time.
