    The new McLaren models

……….some photos I took yesterday at the Historic Motorsport Reunion ( the event used to be referred to as the Wine Country Classic ) at Sonoma Raceway of the two latest McLaren offerings, the revised 650S in a remarkable orangie gold color and the replacement for the iconic F1, the flagship P1, in a perfect imitation of 1954 Buick Titian Metallic Red - I am positive a few of the old timers will remember precisely the color I'm talking about..

No comment on these newest McLarens because I've learned that personal tastes and ideals of design, engineering and aesthetics are much too subjective a matter to discuss rationally on the internet, but I will offer the following: Photo #2, of the same display, in the identical location by the same collector / Mclaren dealer, but taken in the autumn of 2012 at the fall CSRG weekend, featuring his personal F1 and the then brand-spanking new 12C - make up your own minds.

When I participated in a season opening tour three weeks ago, Roland Asch of Carrera Cup fame and Markus Winkelhock, son of the late 962-racer Manfred Winkelhock, led the pack with two new McL 650S.

Even though fascinating cars, Asch complained that except for pushing millions of buttons to adjust the setup, the driver does nothing and the car does everything. And he obviously was more interested in my 964RS, regretting selling his own RS.

I think, we need more modern cars that you enjoy at reasonable speeds cross country. Enjoy usually means getting close to the limit and delivering a fight to the driver without losing the licence. I may have to take a look at the new Alfa 4C or some Lotus Elise, if I want to have a change after all those 911. But do I really want to?
    Keep up the speed!

I don't really "get" the designs either. If form follows function, then I guess excess follows fashion......

What's up with the shark eats a carrot headlights? Seems contrived - cutting edge to no purpose.

The headlights mimic the McLaren Cars logotype. Like the new cars, too clever by half. Read Doug Nye's conversations with Gordon Murray in Driving Ambition about the singular vision behind every last detail of the F1 (a car I would love to drive).

Like the exhaust system acting like an energy absorbtion device in cas of a rear hit? Or the purposedly designed CD loader made to fit in the space available?

One of the most beatyfully engineered car of the last century! Nothing less!

My only gripe with the car is the name. If the beginning of the 2014 F1 season is anything to go by, it should have been called the P8
