    Early Solex Air Box?

I've noticed that most Solex air boxes have the wedges at the ends of the carb covers (first pic). I have one that is rounded at the ends (pic 2-4) with what looks like a factory sticker on the snorkel.

In "Excellence was expected" the 64 911 engine picture has a rounded air cleaner (no wedges) like this one. Does anybody know if the rounded version was a first version and the wedges then came later? Purpose of the wedges?

The rounded one is the first type on a '64 car and the other came a little later on the '65 cars give or take a few. That wedge is for clearance.

I didn't see a date stamp but will look again.

Regarding clearance that's what I thought as well (although I thought internal airflow might also be a reason). It must be "extra" clearance though as I don't believe anything substantial changed on the underside of the engine lid and I'm guessing this box will work on any car running solex carbs.

Hard to tell from your pictures, but, I think the smooth housing is shorter than the one with the wedge. So, PORSCHE changed it for some reason!

Check the exterior belly of the main body of the airbox. If I recall correctly, it is a faint circle with month and year

Apparently I'm going to have to sand the paint to find the date stamp. No big deal as it will need to be prepped and painted for final use anyway.

Can anyone point more precisely to where the date stamp should be?

date location for Solex air box/cleaner

This is the top left of the air box; the side that is removable..no need to sand, this is very visible! Yours being an earlier example could be different!!.....cliff

Perfect. Thanks Cliff. Mine apparently has been painted and the date stamp is not visible...but it will be soon. Thanks.
