Knee Bolster Fitment 74 to 70

Does anyone know if the dash knee bolster from a 74 will fit a non AC 70?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

It looks like they're compatible from 69 to 85.

There are slight differences over the years. Technically, they'll all fit but early ones fit the early cars better due to some changes in the mounting posts. Not sure of the exact year(s) the changes occurred.

I think the fit around the dash face is different at the outboard corners. '74 on had a thicker dash facia and the corner vents.

Here is a visual on that.

Top one is from an early LWB car. Later versions began to change, not sure exactly when (G series maybe?). Note corner angles on later car piece.

    Same part number, btw...

There is an even bigger issue with the mounting posts. At some point the square bases at the bottom of the mounting bolts became taller. The result is that later knee pads, when bolted to an earlier car, leave a small gap and don't bolt up flush like the earlier knee pads do. I'm unsure what year this change occurred.

They all fit and the bolts are in the same place. 74 and later ones use vacuum formed vinyl covering and the earlier ones were upholstered. There is a difference there because of the thickness of the vinyl, nothing else.

That's not 100% correct, Jim. The bolts are in the same place but there is a definite difference regarding construction of the square base of the bolts that affects fitment from earlier to later cars - again, not sure of the exact dates.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion - I was going to post a question regarding this very topic.

I recently purchased a pair of knee pads from a '77 for my '73, after verifying that the part numbers were the same. However, when I fit the pad to the dash, there is a noticeable gap where the pad meets the aluminum dash trim piece, plus an even bigger gap at the ends where the vertical part of the knee pads overlap the ends of the aluminum trim pieces. In fact, I don't see how this could possible work with the knee pads I have. I will take a picture and post later, but if someone could let me know if the early knee pads have a recessed area for the trim pieces to fit into at the end, that would be great.
