4 bangers 718 boxster and cayman

as just read it will really come to live
a 1.6 and a 2.0 l engine, 4 cyl, with turbo charging for the two models boxster and cayman
    will be called 718

the four-cylinder is said to be operating according to the Boxer principle engine, which is expected to be charged by a twin-scroll turbo. This has the advantage that it is possible through different sized turbochargers and ancillaries represent different power levels with the same base engine. In the most powerful version is expected to well over 300 hp.

I understand the reasons for putting a 4 cylinder in the Boxster and Cayman but to say......The legendary Porsche 718 is back.....is a joke. The Boxster and Cayman are a far cry from what the original 718 stood for. Just another marketing ploy to sell more cars. Why can't this company build a 2,500 pound stripped out Miata type car with a 300hp 4 cylinder engine. They could sell them for sub $45K and make a ton of money.

I agree. The heavy on heritage, light on actual connection play is big right now. Nostalgia is in.

Manufacturers seem uncertain how to market given the changing future of the automobile (emissions, safety, fossil fuel fury, alternative energy, ride sharing, driverless, youth apathy towards their products, etc)

It does make you wonder when it runs its course what will be left...

It looks like the engines will be 2.0 and 2.4 or 2.5 liters. The smaller engine will be 91mm by 76.4mm. I'm guessing the larger engine will be about 100mm by 76.4mm. The same as the 2.4 POLO. The unfortunate side of all this is the base 2.0 car will weight 1400kg's! 3080 pounds! The engines have my interest but the car will be twice as heavy as the original 718. That's within 500 pounds of my Audi Avant. Bummer. Another heavy GT car mascaraeded as a sports car. The good news is the Lotus Elise will make a return in the next couple years and will come in at about 1.1 ton. About a 1/2 ton lighter than the 718.
