    Early 1967 911 S Authentication Help

    Gents,

I am in the middle of purchasing a 1967 911 S Roller that is accompanied with a Porsche COA that states the car is indeed a 67 911 S. However, there are some concerns I have as to its correctness. The biggest concern is that the stamped trunk vin and the vin plate do not have the "S" at the end. I myself have had issues with the COA's in the past being incorrect as I know others have. As the car is a rough stripped roller, there is little evidence of S vs Base model. The tach is an "S" tac, but the rest of the gauges appear to reflect the Base model. The wheels (steel), interior fascia trim, as well as the engine number listed on the COA seem to point toward base model also(per Red Book). Granted, these items could have been swapped out especially considering the cars current state. Is it possible this is a real "S" that was in an evolutionary stage as its very early, or is the COA simply wrong? Is there any other occurrence of legit early 67 911 S cars missing an S on the vin? Your $0.02 please.

    Thanks in advance

According to the Tech Spec book, the engine number and chassis number point to it being the 9th iteration of a 1967 normal car... S chassis in 1967 began at 307361S...

Does it have the chrome end plate on the door/arm rest where the open button is? ONLY on S cars, usually a give away as yp factory S or not.

I agree that the engine number appears to point to a base 911, however I'm unsure as to the chassis without seeing pics of the VIN stamp, knee guard stamp and headlight bowls. The usual suspects such as chrome trim, gauges, brakes and wheels could have been removed/replaced somewhere down the line - so I wouldn't take them *too* much into consideration.

I know there's a number of 66 built/67 MY 911S out there wearing sub 307xxx VINs based on the below and the fact that we've had a few members with them in PCASDR; however the real question is whether there's a grey area surrounding the use of the 'S' designation on the VINs of the early 3051xx chassis.. hmm.. I'd be curious to see if there's anyone on the board with a July 66 build (or earlier) S chassis who could chime in on this.

It's worth getting the Kardex. The COA looks like it has a typo ")" by the engine number too. That appears to be a very early manufacture date. My car is 002 68S, and the manuf. date is July 21st.

Yeah, that typo in the engine number combined with the number not falling within the 911S range raises a flag. A Kardex would be extremely handy in this case, although it seems like Porsche NA has put a clamp down on Kardex access - unless there's another mechanism out there for them..

    002 68S, that's a cool find - euro right?

What does the paint tag in the door jamb say. Should be a crudely stamped S at end of vin on this tag

To the best of my knowledge if there isn't an 'S' stamped at the end of the trunk floor stamping it isn't an 'S'

Sounds like you may be looking at the rusty hulk on eBay. The most reliable answer may be the number stamped into the lower dash being the knee bolster.
