    Engine Cooling Fan bolt/Nut

Perhaps a silly question, but the bolt in the picture below looks like its short and that the nut is only holding the fan on by a few threads. Is this unusual?

Fan is binding on the key on the alt shaft. It is caught, so key is hung up and not seated. Remove the pulley and fan and fix the key. Hopefully the fan/key are not buggered up. This would have also caused a misalignment of the fan and crank pulleys.

I have the same issue, my alternator was rebuilt 4 years ago and I didn't notice the nut was not on all the way when I got my car back. Now with my rebuild we noticed it, is there something behind keeping the alternator from seating properly like a reversed washer/spacer or something.

Mike I wonder if you have replaced the alt. nut, looks to be thicker than the normal nut, which would make it stand further off the alt. shaft. Also there should only be 5 to 7 shims, if you have more because of belt sizing that will also force the nut out further. What size is the belt? 9.5 by 710, or 10 by 710?

6 shims and belt is 9.5 x 710. Nut and cup washer are the same thickness as what was there genuine Porsche from Stoddard. Prior to replacement old nut was not flush either.

In OP and Mike's sitch, remove the belt and shims and reinstall just the pulley half, collar, and nut. If still no threads protruding from the nut it's simple: the fan isn't seated properly on the shaft. If the key is installed properly I suspect there's a washer on the backside that shouldn't be there.

Breath of fresh air to see an original fan Mike rather than an over-restored one.
