I have a 71 car which the belts do not retract. Anyone upgrade to the later style? Hard to do? Seems they would be safer and more comfortable.
Thanks,

buy new retractable ones from a place selling VW parts. try Google
I used PEParts but won't do so again.
not hard to do, the car should have the parts/anchor for the belt built in already
Otto retrofitted mine with belts from a 911SC.
The comfort difference is HUGE. They are definitely safer as well.

I just got done putting a set of belts from PEP in Dick Moran's newest 73 RS. They aren't orignial but look pretty good. Installed just as originals no modifications even on factory sport
seats.
IMHO a good alternative at a reasonable price.
Randy, what didn't you like about the PEP set up?
All the best!

It didn't fit my car. It wasn't the setup so much as the lack of cust. svce. Also didn't appreciate them suggesting it was all my fault, I was an idiot etc.
BTW, if you use SC belts, then they are quite a few years old. Nylon degrades over time and with sun exposure. I'd go with new belts.
You're probably right, Randy, I should consider new belts. And recently I spent time sliding around my standard drivers seat at my first Drivers Ed event @ Streets of Willow. My thoughts quickly turned to a period-correct RS style seat and a 5 point harness... If I just didn't have that wife, mortgage, and pesky kids taking the money I could/might/probably will sink into my 911...

Sandy I'm in the same boat. I bought retractables and receivers from a PP board member and they are in great shape. Problem is sorting out the mounting as mine were the non retractable and I am unsure of where and how to mount each component. Haven't spent a ton of time though as the masterbath re-model has left a dent. Then there's that pesky mortgage and the 8 and 5 year olds all squawking for their cut...sheesh, you'd figure a guy could shell out for a driver's seat, throttle bodies and tensioner mods...
(seat is a tough sell since it costs about the same as a new couch...)
