    indicator seals - quick question

    Hi
I'm replacing the indicator lenses and seals on a 69-73 car.
    On the seals:
    - what glue is best - any thoughts
    - do I stick them onto the lens, or onto the indicator unit ?
    - the moulding on the seal is slighly different if i turn it over - is it obvious which way to stick it ?? (!!)
    would appreciate any advice ..

I hate when I go to replace a bulb and tear the seal cuz some fool glued it down.

Personally, I would not use anything. I expect the gasket to conform to the surfaces and seal (even the Brits usually got that right on my Spitfire ... as long as there was no motor oil nearby....). But lets see what the true experts say.

I agree. With three proper screws in place the seal should stay where wou put it.

Maybe they should stay in place but they were glued at the factory with some form of contact adhesive to the body of the indicator not the lens.

I have put new ones in using a modern contact adhesive and the have been fine.

I use Evostik contact adhesive, or clear silicone bathroom sealant, which lets you take the seal off again more easily

If you coat the mating surface with a thin smear of Vaseline (petroleum jelly), it stops the lens sticking to the seal & damaging it when the lens is subsequently removed.

Hmmm...some enterprising soul needs to make these out of silicone, so they are reusable...like the valve cover seals now available.
