FS: Dealer / Auto Show Display License Plates 911 / 912

This 912 dealer / show plate always caught my eye when I was working at Millersport in high school and college.

It was only a few months ago when I saw this type of item for the second time. Charlie posted two different plates from 1967 in this thread: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...r-display-tags

My best guess is that these hard cardboard plates were placed on indoor showroom display cars and/or auto show cars. I’ve looked for period photos of the plates shown in these types of situations but I’ve come up short.

I’d like to do a small run of these plates for 912’s and all variations of 911’s 65-73... even a few for 911L’s. Before I do I need to double check my horsepower figures. I’ve gotten all of my figures from period USA sales brochures, likely the same info that would have appeared on these USA specfic plates at the time. From my research there will be one plate for 912’s and 11 911 variations. Even though the numbers come from factory sources there’s the possibility of typos, etc. Does everything look kosher?

All figures are SAE horsepower as that was what was used on all of the example plates I’ve seen before.

    912 1600cc 102
    911 2000cc 148
    911L 2000cc 148
    911T 2000cc 125
    911T 2200cc 142
    911T 2400cc 129
    911E 2000cc 148
    911E 2200cc 175
    911E 2400cc 157
    911S 2000cc 180 ('67S)
    911S 2000cc 190 ('69S)
    911S 2200cc 200
    911S 2400cc 181

Once all the info is looked over I’ll be able to go have the die made and go to press with them. These should be a cool addition to a showroom fresh car at an event or show.

As far as price I’m thinking $30 (now $15) each or $50 (now $20) for two but let’s see what the estimate for the materials, die cutting and printing comes out to. Anyone interested?

P.S. I know according to the 912 plate I've shown the HP rating in my list should be 103 but I've seen a variation of this plate with a 102 sticker over the 103 so Porsche intended to get the number right. I'll go with the 102 as listed in the sales brochures etc.

    Carl-
    These look terrific!
I have a 1969-912 and would be interested in at least 2 for the 912. It would be a nice addition to my storage garage wall. I am assuming these would be fiber/wood/cardboard and not some type of metal.
    Thanks, Tom in Indiana

    Tom,

Yes, they'll be made of the same off white thick cardboard as the originals.

Knowing the quality of the paint sticks I bought at the Lit meet, these will be of great quality.

A few small updates on the project.

    1) DanM sent me this info the other day. He was looking through some older Panoramas and found this article featuring a '68 911L with one of these dealer show plates on the front. Pretty cool.

Note the Targa on the left has a 'Targa' rear plate as well. Thanks again Dan!

    2) Couldn't help but run off a plate for myself at home while waiting to hear the estimate from the print shop. These should come out nice.

    Carl,
    Any chance for a '66 911 (normale)?

    Dan,

Of course. I intend to make a few of each in all variations of model designation, engine capacity and SAE HP output.

Thank you again Dan! I think I'm going to stick with the '65-'68 font for each of the specs plates... looks like it changed in '69 according to your Panorama photos.

I'm still looking for a printer that can print on 2.5mm chipboard stock. I might have to go with a custom coaster manufacturer!

I've also added a targa and coupe plate to the lineup. From Dan's first picture in post #6 it looks like PoA put the specs plate on the front and the coupe or targa plate on the rear.

Why not make them out of aluminum so they can be retained on the car and driven!

    Carl,
    Cool project!
A minor correction or clarification on the 2.0 liter number you have above. For '69, SAE was 190 for the 2000cc. Since this displacement was the only one used that had different hp ratings, you may think about making a different one for that year if you go past 68.

    Looking forward to seeing them!
