Thread: Airfilter housing 1971 2.2 S

    Airfilter housing 1971 2.2 S

I am about to install my air filter housing, but before I was about to install it, I checked to cold start tube for disruption. There is one brass tube for each bank and both are blocked. I tried to drill the ends open, but no luck. It’s the bent ends inside the housings that seems to be blocked. Could the bend be to sharp? It does not seem like there is paint blocking them. I have tried with high pressure air, no luck. Maybe I have to cut them at the bent ends and manufacture some new bent ends?

    Any comments?

    Thanks
    John

Can you see the three spray holes in each bar? Are they painted over?

Do you have an old fashioned pipe cleaner that will flex around the curve and perhaps knock loose the blockage?

there is only one nossle at each bank. Look at the pictures, the bent pipe that feeds the intakes are only one pr. bank at the inner cylinders on each side....Looks like this early 71 setup do not have a spray for all cylinders?

My understandiing is that the spray bars were originally used to spray raw fuel down the stacks at cold startup on MFI systems. The only problem came when the engine back fired (up) while raw fuel was shooting down the stack. The resulting fire destroyed many an engine and car. Most people, including me, have disabled the system. The system is slightly different on my 73 S. But it looks like your cold start spray bars have been disabled. If that is the situation, I'd leave well enough alone.

See pic. By spray holes, I am talking about 3 pin holes in each bar. One over each stack.

The air filter assembly is the same as my 69.

Look for an extremely tiny hole at the red dots on each bar. The end of the bar should be capped off, as it looks like yours is.

If the system was disabled, then these holes may or may not have been closed off or the cold start valve on top of the MFI filter assembly has been disconnected.

    OK!

Beh911, I did not know that there was supposed to be small holes along the bar. They probably got covered up when the housing was powdercoated. Thanks!

I ground of the paint, and think I found the holes. They are very small! Like 0,1 mm, how do I open them up?

Do not enlarge the holes. Clean them with a pin. They are supposed to piss fuel down the stacks while the engine is cranking on a 70-71 car.

Most people who retain them install a separate switch to actuate the solenoid on top of the MFI filter console. That way, you can put a little spritz of fuel down the stacks, wait a few moments, THEN hit the starter. No spraying fuel while the engine cranks as in the factory system, which runs off the thermo switch in the breather.

72- stacks have the pisser internal. I found on my '71E that often times misalignment of the brass rod (due to a cracked plastic housing) would cause fuel to spray sideways away from the stack. Obviously this was a very hazardous design by the Factory, hence their subsequent remedial measures (FRE 407) in the later year!

ok thanks. I am planning to install a switch to push before start to enrich. After cleaning with a pin, I will try to fill the brass tube with spirits and pressurise.

    I run a switch on my 69 911'
I count to five with the gas pedal down, then crank the engine.
If you powder coated the housing, the debris will not dissolve,
I would try the pin as recommended then spray brake cleaner in the fuel entrance line and let it drain out of the same entrance. Some chemicals may discolor that nicely restored housing,,, also for your safety put on safety glasses.

    Best of luck
