Thread: Fuel Evaporation Control System

  1. #1

    Question Fuel Evaporation Control System

We're in the process of re-assembling Rudy after treating him to a complete body/paint restoration.

Although the plan was to keep the Fuel Evaporation Control System intact...the charcoal canister and the plastic evapoation tank that resided behind the left headlamp bucket have both see better days. I've searched high and low for replacements to no avail.

    Two questions:

    1) Am I correct to assume that this FECS was factory installed for US market bound cars only?

    2) What if any negative results might be encountered if we permanently remove this system?

    Thanks!
    Cheers!

You could basically change it to the ROW style. The vapor collector under the dash is retained, the charcoal cannister and vapor collector are eliminated, the vent tube from the filler neck is eliminated and the hole in the fuel filler well is plugged, as is the hose fitting on the back of the aircleaner and the vent from the fan on the fan housing near the MFI pump. The entire system is shown on PET, I also have a correct ROW car if you need some detail pictures.

Thanks Ed! Should I be concerned about gas fumes in the garage and/or car? Also, pressure buildup in the fuel tank?
    Cheers!

Question.. If you cap it all off, would there enough negative pressure to suck the tank on itself to some degree?

Ed, couldn't they run the 69 system and keep the vent hose from the tank to the under cowl collection box? Then route it out the front like the factory did that year.

Yes Bryce, that is exactly what they did, the tank is still vented through the vapor collector in front of the dash, but does not pick up vapor from the filler neck and is just routed overboard through the inner l/f fender panel, not going to the collector in the l/fender or from there to the charcoal cannister, which filtered and sent the fumes to the intake side of the aircleaner. The fuel tank IS vented so no vacuum is created in it, but yes, fumes are vented overboard. I suppose if you have a really good sniffer you might detect an odor in my garage, but then there are always two 911's in there, only one is the ROW system,,,,so who's to say which is the real culprit? Remember,,,, this is how all cars used to be!!!

    Fuel Evaporation Control System

Frank, here are some pictures of my ROW car. Very simple system, goes from tank to collector up under dash (need a vapor collection point up high so liquid doesn't get in system from full tank) From the vapor box another hose takes it to the welded tube in the inner fender panel, from there a long hose in the fender well vents it down near the A-arm. The vapor hoses to the rear attach to the metal lines in the tunnel at each end, you can eliminate them, cap off the tubes, back of aircleaner, and fan housing. Since there is no welded tube from the filler well to the trunk area, and joining into the vent system, the hole in the filler well is just plugged. Hope this helps you,
    Ed

I'm actually dealing with this issue right now on two separate '69 912s ... both one-owner, all original cars with original venting hoses and "Y" fitting.

My problem: the small vent tube goes nowhere. On both cars it was, literally, just laying on the front tank support. I thought there was supposed to be a hole where the tube stuck into the front tank support/suspension pan, but neither one of these original cars has one.

Ed (or anyone with an all original '69 that cares to chime in), where should I be looking for the hole in the pan?
