Thanks for putting this into a thread. I find it interesting how many small town VW dealerships were involved in the distribution of these cars through 69.

My car came from Harmon VW in Raleigh in May 69. It was Harmon's last year as an authorized Porsche dealer, with the selling rights moving to Triangle Porsche-Audi over in Durham/Chapel Hill in 70.

I imagine my car was one of a very few Esses that every went through this family dealership. Seeing a top of the line Porsche in the delivery aisle surrounded by Beetles and the odd VW sedan or Karmann Ghia must have been quite a sight.

Yup.

I don't have any figures in front of me but I'm guessing Porsche only built a couple thousand S coupes, in any given year.

I seem to recall that Porsche traditionally sold/sent just over half of their cars to the US . . . plus whatever-how-many to Canada. And of those, again traditionally, half went to California.

There are 247 dealers recorded for 1969. 64 were in CA . . . another 13 in FL. I'm gonna guess that these outfits probably sold ~30% of what Porsche ever built.

Now, plug in whatever Porsche's production numbers are for a given year, spread them out among the dealers left, look at where they're located . . .

How many o' these Guys ever saw an S . . . let alone sold or serviced one?

Sure --- Polak, Iverson, Brumos --- all the high-profile Dealers, all sold cars. But how 'bout the Other Guys?

It's really interesting how many of the dealerships at the time are no longer doing business, at least in that name in only 43 years. I scanned the list for dealerships in OH, IN, IL, WI and IA and didn't see any familiar names.

As to the loss of dealers....remember about 15 years ago, when Porsche did some belt tightening on the heels of the poor sales in America ?

Lots of guys went by way of the road closed sign......end of the line.
A good share of 'em just changed to selling their other car lines or added in a Japanese or Korean partner.......shudder.

Don't have my stuff close at-hand, but the PDLs list several 'distributors' for the US + Canada . . . all dividing North America up roughly geographically. For example --- the Western Distributor, I believe, was Volkswagen Pacific?, head-quartered in Culver City, CA. I also seem to remember that some of the '68 L-racers came in through distributors? --- not dealers . . . so, there were different pathways. And European Delivery

Anyway, I'll pull up a full listing tomorrow, and append it to this thread
