Did you check the official parts manual? Also Bosch (tradition) has the parts list for all the models on line as well. That information are scanned old sheets as on the attachment.

Bosch Tradition is an excellent resource for these kinds of questions. But I guess there can be errors in their documentation and of course they do not cover Hella or other brands.

From Bosch document MF1734 we get that for the 911S MY67 Bosch unit 0 301 800 008 was used.
From Bosch document 0301800 we get that 0 301 800 008 is a light for Tungsten bulb without "Hilfslampe" (I assume this is what has been called city light).
Note: In the same document is listed the H4 type also, 0 301 800 100 and onwards, released 12.70.

    For the 911S MY68 the lights change to 0 301 811 001
Bosch document 0301811 gives that 0 301 811 001 is the first H1 light, released 11.67. This was replaced by the H1 light 0 301 811 004 released 5.69 with "revised optics". Not sure what that entails.

So the Bosch headlight we know as the H4 was never available until 12/70. Can you confirm that is your understanding from your documentation?

This is what I had always taken to be fact until the start of this thread.

    Mike,

I am definately not an authority on these lights, I only read in the Bosch documentation. I have found the Bosch information very useful also for other components such as distributors and coils. You can become a user for free on http://www.automotive-tradition.de/d.../recherche.htm and then rummage around to your heart's extent!

I find there to be a discrepancy regarding the H4 lights. The light was released 12.70 but seems not to have introduced on the 911 until some months into the -72 model year? Both MY70 and MY71 cars, as well as MY72 cars up to 12.71 are listed with 0 301 811 004 lights (H1). Only from 1.72 is the 0 301 800 100 (H4) listed. This is all for LHD cars, I have not gone into the RHD cars.

So I guess my understanding from the docs is that the H4 was available 12.70 but not used as baseline until 1.72. But again, this only refers to Bosch units.

Revised optics most likely refers to the original flute pattern in the glass. Very few of the original lenses survive from the first H1 released. I have a set on my car.

Thanks to you all! I think I have a pretty good idea of the correct headlites for my 67S euro-spec car. We'll proceed accordingly!
As requested by Dennis, attached are some before/after photos of the project.

The sound deadening pad is original restored. The exhaust system, heat exchangers are new. All engine sheet metal is restored and powder coated. Not sure what you mean by heater tubes!
