Thread: Authenticity Issue 1969 911 Seat Rail Hardware

  1. #1

Question Authenticity Issue 1969 911 Seat Rail Hardware

I am seeking council re. the type plating for the the socket head screws (aka cheese head screws in the parts book), and the washers, flat and lock, for both the seat stands and seat rails for 1969 or 1970 only.
    Thanks in advance.

Would they not be cad plated? As far as I've seen they would.

    Tom,

As we have discussed in the past, I think you are safe with black oxide screw caps and lock washers, and 6mm gold zinc for a MY69 S. Between what was on my car and other low mile untouched examples out there, that seems to be what was done.

The hardware seemed to change in MY70 for S cars while stayed black oxide for other models, as Mark replies at the end of that series of posts referenced above.

I'm not sure many more people than you, Mark, and myself will chime in on this topic but I do think it is interesting to explore.

Anyone else with original 69 or 70 cars care to chime in?

I have photos of a very original 1969 S which seems to confirms both your, and Marks, assertion that the screws and lock washers were black oxide and the fender washers were gold(?). The thing that is distrubing me is why would the factory use black oxide when that type plating was phased out, to a large degree, starting in the early 1960's. The screws and lock washers used on 356 C model seat rails, which are the same as 911's, were clear zinc.

But then, when did logic have play a part in things factory?

Just trying to get it right.

Tom, perhaps they are black zinc instead of black oxide.

I hear ya, but I think it was logical at the time... it's just frustrating 45 years later looking back...

I think the 'logic' was simply an approach of efficiency... the factory just used up whatever was in the parts bins until supplies ran out. That is my theory.

Although we want it all to line up year by year, SWB / LWB, I think this seat hardware is just another example of the myriad variations. You had changeover to LWB, two facilities (Karmann and factory), numerous suppliers to both, etc.

Happy to hear a different theory though...

Ha! Slow is how long it is taking you to get a front cooler installed on your car... Quit buying more projects so we can go for a proper drive sometime...
