    Coil mounting 2.0S 1968

    Dear early S members,

was there a difference between 68.1 and 68.2 regarding the coil mount?
I have seen several pictures of 68S engines with the coil mounted on the side (like -67) and also on top of fan housing. Now I don't know if there was a change at some point whatsoever...

Is there anyone who knows and can help me out?

    Thanks in advance,
    TM

Mine has it on the side now but I suspect it was on the fan housing at some stage.

The fan housings changed to mount the coil. Not sure exactly when that happened if at all in 68 but it was the case in 69 onwards.

When the Factory put the CDI box on the electrical console, there was no room for the coil. So the coil moved to the fan shroud. A '68 still has the flat plate electrical console, so if you moved it to the fan shroud, there would be a gaping hole there. A '68 should have the coil on the console on the side of the engine compartment, '69 on the fan.

Also the CDI coil is smaller and lighter than the Kettering coil used previously, so it's a better fit on the fan without hitting anything.

I agree. My 68.5 S engine has side mounted coil.

Anyone have a picture of a 68 with CDI and side mounted coil? Is the same side panel used? Where does the fuel pump get relocated to?

Bill, there was a retrofit kit that put the CDI forward of the console, I don't have a photo, but I saw one in a 69T.

It is possible to put it on the console-- here is '065 before restoration, many years ago. Of course this is not correct but it worked.
