Initially, 500 units of the racy model were to be produced for Group IV homologation, but due to demand, a second series of 536 units was produced, this time for Group III homologation. Finally, a third series of 554 units was produced, and a total of 1,590 units of the 2.7L RS were produced in the three series. The first 500 examples, the most sought-after and desirable, are equipped with a light body without blaxon, and are thus 15 kg lighter. This is the case of this example in Orange Tangerine 018, which is today in a beautiful state of presentation.

Its six successive owners have used the car with passion and it now has about 258,500 km on the clock. The last owner acquired it 23 years ago. Known by the Club RS de France, regularly serviced and with a clear history, the car runs perfectly and is a real pleasure to drive. In 2021, the car has benefited from a complete engine rebuild. In addition to the original service booklet, we have countless service and parts invoices, and technical inspection reports.

The car now has many of the elements of the Lightweight (the lighter versions of the 2.7L RS), such as bucket seats, door panels or bumperless shields. Many of the original accessories, including the crankcase and touring seats, will be included with the car. We have an appraisal file and an overhaul is scheduled for the sale as well as tire replacement.

When I saw the photo under the trunk where the right side gas tank hold down was a ball of rust, I wondered what the underneath looked like. Then I came to the underneath engine/gearbox photo. Yuk,very rusty car. Wonder what’s under that orange paint.The engine case looks like it was stored in salt water.

Correct examples of these cars do not come to the market often and if they do, it is always exciting to see one of these legends.
Our car on offer, RS# 0254, is one of the initial first 500 examples produced, rarely available and highly collectable!

Factory records show a production date of December 1972 and delivery in January 1973 in Germany. Finished in light yellow (color code 6262) over black interior and equipped with very rare electric sunroof and electric windows, heated rear window, retractable seatbelts and power antenna.

The history of the car can be traced back to the 80’s, when Charles Rupp, owner of Jet Set car in France purchased the car. It was later sold to a Belgium collector and then back to Germany. Max Letowski, a Canadian living in France purchased the car in the 90’s and under his ownership the RS was used for display from the official Porsche Center Paris at Retromobile to celebrate the 30th RS anniversary in 2003. The car also took 1st place that year at Retromobile and was featured over 8 pages in a French Porsche magazine. The RS later (about 2004) sold to known Porsche collector Frank Gallogly in the US. It changed hands within the US a few more times (Symbolic Motor cars, Steve Tillack) until the current owner purchased the vehicle in 2010 from California collector Lorenzo Zambrano.

Under current ownership, the RS underwent a comprehensive nut and bolt restoration with 100% original configuration in mind. The numbers matching engine was completely sorted and rebuilt by well-known and respected Porsche guru Ed Mayo of Mayo’s Performance in Texas and it has less than 2000 miles on it now. The restoration process is fully documented with original invoices and over 1000 photos!

Needless to say, this RS has been owned and taken care of by true enthusiasts throughout its life and only the best in the industry took part in the restoration process. Mechanically, as well as visually, the car is in A1 condition and performs flawless. The RS runs, drives and handles like a dream!

It retains all of its original options and is 100% numbers matching including engine#, transmission#, paint code and “hidden” production number.
The car comes with the original tool kit, spare tire, original air pump, and jack. Original owner’s manual and RS supplement in German language as well as the original French Magazine article.
Without a doubt, this Carrera RS represents a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the first 500 examples of these legendary cars in a stunning color combination and very nicely optioned.
This car is a truly excellent example for the most discerning collector and enthusiast.
The Carrera RS is now 50 years old and considered a blue chip legend among enthusiasts and collectors!

Even if it has gad a storied list of owners and "the best in the industry" have looked after it it still has the wrong rear slam panel - although from this photo(from about 10 years ago) when it still had its french plates (and I think Frank G owned it) on it it was wrong at that stage so has been like that for a long time
