"Eine werksseitige Restauration zur Matching Number ist verbunden mit Porsche Classic." would most likely want to say that "a factory restauration to a matching numbers state has to be performed by Porsche Classic".
No clue though what makes him think that PC would ever do so (= de facto forging serial numbers)...

Surprisingly 9113600545 is back on the block this weekend at Mecum Houston, where an early-ish M471 seems to be quite out of place amongst the 1000 muscle cars and clapped-out dealer trade-in exotics.

0283 was one of the quota of just circa fifty lighter in weight homologation chassis examples that Porsche made in RHD configuration for the RS as originally specified for 500 examples in order to get homologation. It would have been ordered early October 1972 by its first owner before the factory announced (around time is the British Motor Show in Earls Court London) in mid October 1972 that due to unexpected sell out of the limited edition 500 73 RS at launch they’d make 500 more examples (including what turned out to be another 50 RHD M472 over what became eventually three series ):

Since the later RS chassis made in the third series were assembled using regular production methods and stoppped udons special parts probably only about seventyish examples of Carrera RS buy in right hand conformed to lighter in weight chassis at the core such yet it could have met the FiA homologation weight target. Weren't all the original 917 series built as RHD?

A RHD 73 RS is rare especially being one of the first 500 RS RHD examples its uncommon.
One of the 319 first 500er RS chassis factory publication tells us completed before end of calendar 1972. Only about three handfuls of RS were built in RHD configuration before end of calendar 72.

Chassis 283 is roughly contemporary with the two chassis selected to be used by the factory as East Africa rally cars in 73 and again in 74.

Surprised Jay Kay is selling it had long chat to him about this car in November at Peninsular Hotel in Hyde Park London and he was very enamoured with it, told me he preferred it to an M471 he’d also owned.

The “white knuckle ride” pop video referred to is here:
    https://youtu.be/k_bQ0h85gY8

A known car in UK before pop celebrity owner. The Carrera stripe down the side was not offered except option of red green or blue when ordering GP white 908 the reserved colour exclusively for RS model 73 ( particularly nicotine as the Carrera and other decals in white wasn’t offered by factory on 73 RS) plus 7/8 Fuchs (especially what appear to be hub centric version Fuchs uses from model year 74 impact bumper Carrera ) were also not offered by Porsche during the first 73 RS series. Headrests were an extra (paid m-option) in UK c16/EG specification in 72/73 so a number of cars including the then top of range M472 RS didn’t always have them — the safety benefits eg derisking whiplash weren’t well understood back then.

This particular example has an interesting ownership quirk in back in its history that some of us have heard about.

Interesting background. Thanks Steve. Intrigued by the ownership quirk you mention. As someone interested in this car can you share?

It is second hand information although I believe at least one other who posts here regularly knows the same. Perhaps best to let facts come out in due diligence as never seen hard documentary evidence on the story of one particular ownership change. Not sure it would affects value or provenance if the events happened as I’ve heard them explained. Essentially what I heard was about a novel way it once changed hands, some years back. Any prospective purchaser should enquire and check the records — I suggest just take this as a heads up that one change ownership might turn out to be quirky sequence of events.

I passed on buying this car about 22 years ago. It was owned by a fella called Mark who lived in the same Kent village as me. He had owned it for at least 15 years or so. I decided to buy a house instead.! It had no Carrera script whilst in his ownership. The car was brokered by Autofarm here in the UK for the sum of £82k. I believe Jay Kay purchased at this time.

I believe records will show 0283 was at one time in eighties owned by Bob Watson

Bob used to be a technician with Ken Street a Lotus specialist in Chelsea London . My late friend independent Porsche specialist Chris Turner set Bob on a new career direction by loaning him the keys to his 911. Bob left his employer and went to learn the Porsche ropes with Chris Maltin who was transitioning from an informal set up at his family home near Henley on Thames to become an official dealer. Bib then left and went to Dage Sport working in exotic on to set up the eponymous business - although he worked in road cars he became best known for preparing 911 race cars for himself and others particularly in the very popular Porsche Club Great Britain production car championships that ran throughout much of the 1980s. Many racers used Bob’s services and his dyno. My own rhd RS has invoices from Dage and then from Bob’s own workshop. Used to enjoy chatting when I was hanging out with Chris — he had great recollection until after a rather sad business and personal decline, he died in on 2016.

    RS vin 0446

Even rarer RHD example being one of the 17 first 500 homolgation series with conversion to M471.

There were only a handful of RHD that left the factory in M471 form among that important quota of about fifty of the 500 originally conceived to homologation the 911 and move it front and centre of the factory’s racing activities when the 908 917 were being sidelined by the forthcoming regulations changes agreed by the FiA at the meeting hosted by the royal automobile club in 1972
    image.jpeg

Further distinction is the history of being a (largely) road configuration private entry when used nearly new in the last real Targa Florio in 1973 where it finished a creditable 18th an event that was won by the factory’s Carrera RS with M491 conversion when driven by Van Lennep and Muller.

In the reserved for RS colour 908 Grand Prix White with Mexico blue wheels and the blue Carrera side decals

A known car in UK&I Porsche RS community.
