It might not be called that but on the filler neck there is a tube that connects to a hose that spits it to the back of the air filter, then another hose that empties down to under the car. It can be a mess.

No updates here - 11quarts warm still reading low. I think next steps are to text the oil pressure with a mechanical gage to verify the pressure pump half of the pump is working properly.
have you driven it or are you just running the engine?

Does the car have a oil cooler, they do increase the volume, also what does the gauge on the instrument panel show?
as Ed said the motor must be warm (very) and running when checking

Yes, checking after driving and getting the temp up to 180, with the car running and idling for a few minutes. It is honestly difficult to get the motor any hotter than 180. I can try to give it the italian tune-up on 101 this weekend and see if that gets it hotter.

The concept of heating the oil to expand it such that it registers on the dipstick is clear to me and I have been trying to achieve that result but no luck so far.
No oil cooler other than the one on the block.

11 quarts in the car and still barely registering on the dipstick which I confirmed is correct for the car - 1973. Tried an earlier style dipstick and it would not fit in the tank.

But did you ever check the tank itself is correct version for model 73 ?

The 73 tank was one year item so uncommon and possibly weren’t always available if replacement needed. Probably for this reason I see model 73 cars with later model 74 tank fitted as replacement. The 74 has bigger capacity, the easiest way to check if tank correct from a distance is to look if the bottom of tank hangs lower than rear bodywork. There are numerous more detailed fundamental differences to double check once open the lid or peer under that when know what looking for such as console and the shape — suspect some owners may not even realise that a swap to later version was made to their car at some point.

Some useful discussion of detailed specification points here:
    https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...Tank-Questions

The kundendienst-information Modell 73 devotes a bit is space to the tank and filter as changes were made at the time

See Gled comment (post #2) comment about the 74 taking quart more than 73 that even includes images (being British it quaint to often read comments from American-based posters using such capacities , measurements on fractions of inch etc on ESR because Porsche work in metric system, perhaps tech specs booklets or similar might give the exact extra capacity of 74 tank over 73 version in litres as doubt was a “quart” — little difference in practice US-quart vs litre but would be interesting to know exactly what the factory noted as the extra)

Care is needed because sometimes there is confusing information kicking about so not always correct what comes up from some vendors if do a Google search 73 oil tank — with 73 tank being one year only it was uncommon hence gets misunderstood — for example the image in post #3 on the link is doesn’t appear to be 73, it seems to be a repro of a 74 tank ?

So add 1/2 a quart and see what that registers.

Did the front oil cooler question get answered? An added oil cooler and lines would certainly add capacity.
